Legal Ethics, Professional Responsibility, and the Legal Profession

"As the legal profession undergoes structural changes, longstanding principles of ethics still govern the day-to-day lives of practicing lawyers. This new Hornbook on professional responsibility provides both a snapshot of ongoing systemic changes and a thorough examination of the fundamentals of lawyer and judicial ethics. As a multi-dimensional work by scholarly experts in several fields, the Hornbook (1) begins with the changing environment in which legal services are provided in the modern economy; (2) continues with a theoretical grounding of legal ethics in moral philosophy; (3) offers empirical evidence and discussion about professional formation and moral development; (4) provides a comprehensive analysis of the law of lawyer ethics; (5) includes a rich discussion of the modern law of legal malpractice, and (6) concludes with exploration of the rules of judicial ethics."--Publisher website.

The empirical research from which the conference originally sprang remains a rare example of collaborative research between academic and practising lawyers. From the professor's side, public concern at the cost and quality of justice is forcing them to look beyond practitioners' manuals and the trade press for ideas. From the academic side there is great interest in the study of ethics and culture in the legal profession and the answers which this study may provide to wider questions concerning the content and practice of law at the access to justice debate.

Origins of the European Economy

Communications and Commerce AD 300-900

For fifty years debate has raged about early European commerce during the period between antiquity and the middle ages. Was there trade? If so, in what - and with whom? New evidence and new ways of looking at old evidence are now breaking the stalemate. Analysis of communications - the movements of people, ideas and things - is transforming our vision of Europe and the Mediterranean in the age of Charlemagne and Harun al Rashid. This is the first comprehensive analysis of the economic transition during this period for over sixty years. Using new materials and new methodology, it will attract all social and economic historians of antiquity and the middle ages, and anyone concerned with the origins of Europe, the history of the slave trade, medicine and disease, cross-cultural contacts, and the Muslim and Byzantine worlds.

This is the first comprehensive analysis of the economic transition during this period for over sixty years.

Islam and the Moral Economy

The Challenge of Capitalism

How do modern Muslims adapt their traditions to engage with today's world? Charles Tripp's erudite and incisive book considers one of the most significant challenges faced by Muslims over the last sixty years: the challenge of capitalism. By reference to the works of noted Muslim scholars, the author shows how, faced by this challenge, these intellectuals devised a range of strategies which have enabled Muslims to remain true to their faith, whilst engaging effectively with a world not of their own making. The work is framed around the development of their ideas on Islamic socialism, economics and the rationale for Islamic banking. While some Muslims have resorted to confrontation or insularity to cope with the challenges of modernity, most have aspired to innovation and ingenuity in the search for compromise and interaction with global capitalism in the twenty-first century.

EBOOK: Towards Strategic Staff Development in Higher Education

This book focuses on strategic staff development in higher education, a sector in which it has been largely viewed as an operational activity with little organizational relevance. The book demonstrates how staff development needs to be based on modern theories of 'organizational learning', aligning itself with institutional and departmental needs as well as the wants and needs of individual staff. The book takes a broad definition of staff development and seeks to cover all aspects of the academic role and the interests of all staff. The traditional focus on teaching and learning is covered but not to the exclusion of other aspects or the interface between different roles. In order to achieve a strategic focus, authors are drawn from a range of backgrounds, including senior staff with strategic leadership roles. The book is, therefore, directed to a wider readership than the community of staff development professionals and designed partly to challenge the dominant discourse and established priorities of staff developers. Towards Strategic Staff Development in Higher Education seeks to combine scholarly review of relevent literature with practical strategies and suggestions for the intended readership, principally senior staff, heads of department and staff development professionals.

Education Policy

Presents 38 specially commissioned or previously published (1988-98) studies on recent changes in education policy throughout the world over the last quarter of the 20th century. Among the changes they explore are the move from localized and national policies toward encompassing international policies, the integration of schools into the world ofwork as demands for efficiency and performance have supplanted more traditional liberal goals of education to promote and provide the ideals of an educated elite and empowered autonomous individuals, the overt incorporation of market-led economic theories into education policy and associated management styles, and the transformation of education from a traditional welfare right to a privatized commodity. Their general themes are the definition, analysis, criticism, and research of education policy; markets and economic development; education policy and the state; race, development, and culture; and social justice, literacy, and new technologies. There is no subject index.
