Functional Grammar (FG) as set out by Simon Dik is the ambitious combination of a functionalist approach to the study of language with a consistent formalization of the underlying structures which it recognizes as relevant. The present volume represents the attempts made within the FG framework to expand the theory so as to cover a wider empirical domain than is usual for highly formalized linguistic theories, namely that of written and spoken discourse, while retaining its methodological precision. The book covers an array of phenomena, both from monologue and from dialogue material, relating to discourse structure, speaker aims and goals, action theory, the flow of information, illocutionary force, modality, etc. The central question underlying most of the contributions concerns the relation between, and the division of labour between the existing grammatical module of FG on the one hand, and a discourse or pragmatic module capable of handling such discourse phenomena on the other. What emerges are new proposals for the formal treatment of for instance illocutionary force and the informational status of constituents. Many of the data discussed are from 'real' language rather than being invented, and samples from various languages other than English (Spanish, Polish, Latin, French) are examined and used as illustrations of the theoretical problem to be solved. Volume 8, the third of the historical volumes of A Treatise of Legal Philosophy and General Jurisprudence, offers a history of legal philosophy in common-law countries from the 17th to the 19th century. Its main focus (like that of Volume 9) is on the ways in which jurists and legal philosophers thought about law and legal reasoning. The volume begins with a discussion of the ‘common law mind’ as it evolved in late medieval and early modern England. It goes on to examine the different jurisprudential traditions which developed in England and the United States, showing that while Coke’s vision of the common law continued to exert a strong influence on American jurists, in England a more positivist approach took root, which found its fullest articulation in the work of Bentham and Austin.

Tatabahasa: Inkonsistensi Bahasa Indonesia

Ada banyak kebingungan dalam tatabahasa di Bahasa Indonesia. Pertama acuan tatabahasa ini dulu disebut dengan nama EjaanYang Disempurnakan (EYD) kemudian pada tahun 2017 diperbarui dengan Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia yang dirangkum dalam Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia. Pemilihan kata ejaan pada panduan baku Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia dan tetap menggunakan kata Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia menjadi tidak mengena pada inti permasalahan yaitu tentang tatabahasa (grammar) Indonesia. Selain tidak tepat memberikan tatabahasa dengan istilah ejaan. Tatabahasa Indonesia juga memiliki banyak kekurangan secara logika dan struktur bila dibandingkan dengan Bahasa Inggris yang menjadi acuan bahasa internasional untuk keperluan memudahkan translasi dan interpretasi makna (interpreting). Terlebih lagi ada banyaknya istilah-istilah (idioms) yang memerlukan pemahaman khusus tentang budaya suatu negara dalam menginterpretasikan ke Bahasa Indonesia dan atau sebaliknya ke dalam Bahasa Inggris dan atau ke bahasa asing lainnya. Studi ini memberikan usulan perbaikan pada tatabahasa (grammar), logika, makna, dan penyebutan nama baku untuk “Tatabahasa Indonesia” menggantikan “Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia”.
