TEORI DAN FILSAFAT PENDIDIKAN

Sebagai ilmu terapan, ilmu pendidikan membangun eksistensinya dengan memanfaatkan teori dan pandangan dari berbagai disiplin ilmu murni, seperti psikologi, sosiologi, dan antropologi. Pada masa penjajahan Belanda di negeri ini misalnya, Langeveld, seorang berbangsa Belanda, yang diklaim oleh berbagai pihak sebagai tokoh pendidikan, adalah seorang psikolog. Ia menulis buku teori pendidikan dengan judul Beknopte Theoretische Pedagogik. Buku ini terbit tahun 1944, dan amat luas digunakan pada masanya. Bila ditelusuri jauh ke belakang, pada awalnya, filsafat sebagai ibunya ilmu menjadi sumber utama teori dan pandangan tentang pendidikan. Para filosof Yunani kuno, seperti Socrates, Plato, dan Aristoteles, juga adalah pemikir-pemikir pendidikkan. Bahkan belakangan ini, sedang popular metode pembelajaran yang disebut metode Socrates. Dalam literatur-literatur pendidikan, hampir selalu muncul tiga teori utama, yakni teori empirisme, teori nativisme, dan teori konvergensi. Tiga teori ini masing-masing merupakan hasil kajian tiga filosof, sekaligus psikolog, bahkan ada yang berlatar belakang pendidikan dokter. John Locke sebagai pencetus teori empirisme misalnya, diposisikan sebagai filosof dan pendidik oleh berbagai pihak, karena ia berfilsafat dan mengemukakan sejumlah teori pendidikan. Namun ia pun mengenyam dan menyelesaikan pendidikan kedokteran
