Theory and Practice in Professional Learning

The responsibility for facilitating effective continuing professional development (CPD) is based firmly in schools. Frequently, decisions are based on gut feeling, advertisements received or prior experiences. Effective Teacher Development encourages readers to move beyond this and to enhance their strategic decision making in order to effectively develop CPD programmes within their school, partner schools, federations or school chains. This volume shows how grassroots educational innovations and technology can be brought together in a fresh approach to human resource development in public social services. Based on a three-decade-long engagement with innovation in public education, this book provides an illustration of how teacher-driven innovations can be transformed into learning objects for technology-based professional development. It describes how innovations can be identified, screened and validated, and disseminated through two mechanisms—a clearinghouse-based approach and grassroots innovation “fairs.” It then demonstrates how these innovations can form the backbone of a “third space,” problem-based-learning curriculum, which can be delivered through a technology platform for large-scale professional development. A Selected Annotated Bibliography : Recent Works Collected by the Office of Research, U.S. Department of Education

The purposes of this U.S. Department of Education project were twofold: (1) to explore the process for obtaining materials, documents, and publications from abroad that were "fugitive" in nature (i.e., documents not typically found in the ERIC system or library collections); and (2) to develop a database of both the materials collected and the people contacted or identified as having expertise in teacher training. The search yielded materials, mostly in English, from more than 38 countries. This annotated bibliography contains a selection of the English language materials collected, along with several ERIC documents and journal articles. The entries vary from general descriptions of teacher training programs and requirements to proposed reform strategies. Also included are many studies of student teacher experiences, training effectiveness, and specific activities such as practicum experiences and distance learning. (LL)

Perspectives, Opportunities and Challenges

Chapter one will review teacher development in Sudanese state primary schools, as well as the poor resources available to teachers. It discusses the need for teacher development and training to help with the transition to a new curriculum written for these schools, and the challenges faced by the teachers, as the new curriculum is quite different from the previous one taught in state schools.This chapter describes a case study using a qualitative ethnographic research methodology that examines the significant role of developing resilience and grit within a pre-service teacher education program.Chapter three discusses the broad interface between the concepts of agency, professional identity and creative insubordination. It presents discussions about the agency and professional identity of teachers in narrating their actions of creative insubordination. It aims to map and analyze written narratives, identifying insubordinate actions revealed by teachers teaching mathematics and discuss how these attitudes, incorporated into teaching practice, contributed to the effectiveness of teaching statistics in their mathematics classes in Elementary School.The following chapter will employ a critical analysis of an instrumental theory-building pre-service teacher case-study as the foundation of a theoretical-based, cyclical, self-reflective teacher cultural competence professional development model.In this chapter, attention will be paid to the modern environment, which is a complex phenomenon revealing many interesting trends.
