Setelah Indonesia merdeka ada hal yang sering mengganggu dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara yaitu masalah kedaulatan, persatuan dan karakter bangsa. Dalam konteks kedaulatan kita sering dihadapkan pada masalah seperti pemaksaan nilai global, intervensi politik dari luar negeri dan separatisme, individualisme, radikalisme, ketergantungan asing dan daya saing rendah, kemiskinan, kesenjangan sosial, penyebaran obat terlarang, perdagangan manusia dan korupsi, kolusi serta nepotisme (KKN), bencana alam, premanisme, provokasi negatif dan konflik horizontal, kejahatan siber, penyebaran virus komputer dan pencurian HAKI, intervensi proses peradilan serta multitafsir hukum. Dalam konteks persatuan kita sering dirhadapkan pada konflik horizontal yang disebabkan oleh perbedaan suku, agama, ras dan antar golongan (SARA). Konflik-konflik tersebut bukan hanya menyebabkan kerugian materil seperti rumah masyarakat maupun fasilitas umum publik, tetapi juga menyebabkan banyaknya korban jiwa. Konflik seolah menjadi bagian perjalanan bangsa ini. Dalam konteks karakter, mengacu pada penyampaian Thomas Lickona tentang tanda kehancuran suatu bangsa seperti; meningkatnya kekerasan, ketidakjujuran, fanatik terhadap kelompok, rendahnya rasa hormat terhadap orang tua dan guru, semakin kaburnya moral baik dan buruk, penggunaan bahasa yang memburuk, meningkatnya perilaku merusak diri seperti narkoba, alkohol, sex bebas, rendahnya rasa tanggung jawab, menurunya etos kerja, saling rasa curiga, serta kurangnya kepedulian diantara sesama Potret masalah di atas haruslah disikapi dengan bijak dan dicarikan formula yang tepat untuk meminimalisir serta menghilangkannya. Oleh karena itu, lahirnya buku ini sebagai salah satu usaha untuk menekan permasalahan di atas.
