Concepts and Experiences

This collection of papers presents the critical reflections on the management and planning of education of 18 senior officials working in 12 small island nations. The papers are a result of their participation in the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Planning and Management in Small States program at the University of Malta. The book is divided into two sections. After an introductory essay and two papers on generic management and administration issues in small states, the papers in the first section deal with educational management, addressing the education process from its internal organizational or operational perspective. This section addresses such topics as resource allocation, Total Quality Management, staff recruitment, job satisfaction, and the role of principals. The second section of the book discusses educational planning, focusing on education as a tool for national development. This section discusses such topics as school-business linkages, the general role of educational planning, and specific developmental challenges facing primary, secondary, vocational, and adult education in small countries. Each chapter begins with a brief summary of the key arguments of the paper and ends with a discussion point based on the contents. (Contains a subject and author index.) (WFA).

TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

The purpose of this book is to give new perspectives on how to teach English as a foreign language in Indonesia. English is one of the subjects taught in junior high school and senior high school which is based on the curriculum and syllabus determined by the government. The syllabus consists of the core competence, basic competence, objective, materials, methods, and evaluation. The subjects must contribute to the establishment of attitude, skills, and knowledge. This book is completed with something new: Curriculum 2013. The students of this subject are introduced with the history of language teaching, the spread of “Englishes”, and the concept of ENL, ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESL, and TESOL. The concept, the framework, and the standards in the new curriculum are also included in this book. In addition, the students are also introduced to scientific learning model such as thematic learning, discovery learning, and problem-based learning. Furthermore, the kinds of text as learning materials are also given. It is expected that upon completing this subject, the students are able to teach English as a foreign language in Indonesia using lesson plan based on the syllabus of curriculum 2013. The examples of syllabus and lesson plans used in teaching English for junior high school and senior high school are available in the appendix of this book.

Manajemen Konflik

Manajemen konflik merupakan serangkaian aksi dan reaksi antara pelaku maupun pihak luar dalam suatu konflik. Manajemen konflik termasuk pada suatu pendekatan yang berorientasi pada proses yang mengarahkan pada bentuk komunikasi (termasuk tingkah laku) dari pelaku maupun pihak luar dan bagaimana mereka mempengaruhi kepentingan (interests) dan intrepretasi. Bagi pihak luar (di luar yang berkonflik) sebagai pihak ketiga, yang diperlukannya adalah informasi yang akurat tentang situasi konflik. Hal ini karena komunikasi efektif antara pelaku dapat terjadi jika ada kepercayaan terhadap pihak ketiga. Manajemen konflik merupakan langkah-langkah yang diambil para pelaku atau pihak ketiga dalam rangka mengarahkan perselisihan kearah hasil tertentu yang mungkin atau tidak mungkin menghasilkan ketenangan, hal positif, kreatif, bermufakat, atau agresif. Manajemen konflik dapat melibatkan bantuan diri sendiri, kerja sama dalam memecahkan masalah (dengan atau tanpa bantuan pihak ketiga) atau pengambilan keputusan oleh pihak ketiga. Suatu pendekatan yang berorientasi pada proses manajemen konflik menunjuk pada pola komunikasi (termasuk perilaku) para pelaku dan bagaimana mereka mempengaruhi kepentingan dan penafsiran terhadap konflik.
