ATM Networks

Concepts, Protocols, Applications

This new edition of a popular book offers a strengthened focus on one of the hottest networking strategies: ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). ATM is one of the industry's current fast-moving topics, with multi-million-dollar investments being made at a time when the technology is still being debated.

And yet ATM seems so easy once one explains that it isn't about banking . After all , what could be so hard about a protocol that just transmits data as fixed - sized packets ? But ATM is hard to explain . A large part of the difficulty ...

ATM Transport and Network Integrity

This book will help network engineers take better advantage of ATM technology for their transport network planning. ATM Transport and Network Integrity offers useful information for network planners to design and evolve cost-effective networks. The book focuses on methods of network design to ensure proper network function under stress, such as congestion or failure. ATM Transport and Network Integrity discusses the most efficient methods of support for broadband service and control transport in high-speed transport networks, network services, and transport architectures and control and management. It covers in detail the differences between ATM and STM transport and how these differences affect transportnetwork planning and engineering. Key Features * End-to-end networking, including information, signaling and control transport * Broadband network integrity, including traffic management for network congestion and traffic restoration for network failure conditions * Pioneer of SONET and ATM self-healing networks * Case study description and implications * Good insights for future IP-over-ATM network design and planning

Idiomatic American English

A Step-by-Step Workbook for Learning Everyday American Expressions

[The following excerpt from the Introductiion gives a clear idea of the book's contents.] Idiomatic expressions give English its color and vitality. They are indispensable to the daily speech of the people and to the language of newspapers and books, television and movies. Whenever you hear a phrase whose meaning cannot be understood even if you know the definitions of the separate words involved, you have probably encountered an idiom. Mastering idioms requires a great deal of listening, studying, practice, and usage. You cannot ignore this part of the language: idiomatic expressions and more formal grammar should be given equal time. The lessons in this book are designed to teach you the kind of informal, everyday speech--including many slang words as well as idioms--that is commonly understood by all native Americans, no matter what their level of education. There are various levels of idiomatic difficulty, and each group of lessons listed in the Table of Contents begins with the easiest lessons and ends with the more advanced ones. However, you may use them in any order you desire; each lesson is self-contained. Each lesson begins with a dialogue, since idioms are best learned in meaningful verbal contexts. A vocabulary section then explains the idioms in clear, concise definitions. (Where the notation "neg." appears after an idiom, it means the idiom is generally used in the negative. For example, have the heart to (neg.) indicates the phrase is normally used in a negative statement such as "I didn't have the heart to tell her." Where alternate words are given in parentheses, either word may be used interchangeably. For example, down the drain (tubes) means you may say "down the drain" or "down the tubes." Two sets of exercises are included in each lesson. In the first, you are asked to choose the correct idiom needed to complete a sentence. In the second, you will substitute an idiomatic expression for an italicized phrase or sentence.

The lessons in this book are designed to teach you the kind of informal, everyday speech--including many slang words as well as idioms--that is commonly understood by all native Americans, no matter what their level of education.

Conversational Routines in English

Convention and Creativity

It is surprising how much of everyday conversation consists of repetitive expressions such as 'thank you', 'sorry', would you mind?' and their many variants. However commonplace they may be, they do have important functions in communication. This thorough study draws upon original data from the London-Lund Corpus of Spoken English to provide a discoursal and pragmatic account of the more common expressions found in conversational routines, such as apologising, thanking, requesting and offering. The routines studied in this book range from conventionalized or idiomatized phrases to those which can be generated by grammar. Examples have been taken from face-to-face conversations, radio discussions and telephone conversations, and transcription has been based upon the prosodic system of Crystal (1989). An extensive introduction provides the theory and methodology for the book and discusses the criteria for fixedness, grammatical analysis, and pragmatic functions of conversational routines which are later applied to the phrases. Following chapters deal specifically with phrases for thanking, apologising, indirect requests, and discourse-organising markers for conversational routines, on the basis of empirical investigation of the data from the London-Lund Corpus of Spoken English.
