Fostering Global Leaders

A Case Study of the Korea Foundation for the Next Generation Sports Talent and Its Partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Korea Foundation for the Next Generation Sports Talent (NEST) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have been collaborating to foster global sports talent through academic cooperation and have been interacting to reeducate retired South Korean elite athletes since December, 2008. The purpose of the partnership is to create mutual international understandings between the two parties. This study explores the intended/initial goals of the partnership and whether these goals have changed (if so how and why) or remained the same. If the goals have remained the same, has anything changed? Results indicate that fostering global leadership skills, English language training, academic and cultural competencies were the intended goals of the partnership. These goals have remained the same over the span of six years, despite the fact that leadership between the two parties has changed twice. At the same time, the program has become more sophisticated and has expanded its programs to include more field specific educational seminars and opportunities as well as more opportunities for social and cultural exchange.

The objective of the study is to examine how the moral values can be integrated in the methods of teaching Islamic education and the impacts of these values to the students. The study intended to emphasize the practical application of moral values in view of both theoretical and practical knowledge in Islamic Education System. The study applied an analytical qualitative method to extract data from its sources. Also the documentary analysis was conducted on the primary sources along with interviews and classroom observation to explore effective methods and scrutinize the strengths and weaknesses of those methods as used by the teachers of Islamic Education in enhancing the moral values for the students at the identified School. The study revealed that, the task of a teacher is not confined only on imparting knowledge and skills to learners but also to enhance the students' moral conduct through Islamic values, ethics, and manners. The study also revealed that the success of an educational process to a large extent depends on the degrees of moral practices in Educational Institutions in cooperation with teachers, parents, religious leaders and community at large. Consistent with that, the study discovered that Islamic Education Teachers used different methods and approaches to inculcate moral values to the students. Among these are; questioning, seminars, group discussions, models, inductive, storytelling, metaphor and lecture based method, in which all of these were proved to be in conformity with the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet [PBUH]. Consequently, the study recommends that at present and in future teachers in Zanzibar Schools should have to put weigh and focus on the same methods used by the teachers at Lumumba Secondary School to inculcate moral values to the students; this should go hand in hand with the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet [PBUH] to improve their efforts in shaping students' behavior for success in their life. In doing so, the future youth will be saved from dragging in the world of moral decay. Finally, teachers must be constantly motivated and upgraded through different methods and techniques of teaching Islamic values including seminars, workshops and refresher courses in order to improve and raise the level of education among the teachers community.

Among these are; questioning, seminars, group discussions, models, inductive, storytelling, metaphor and lecture based method, in which all of these were proved to be in conformity with the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet [PBUH].

Negotiating Identity and Tradition in Single-faith Religious Education

A Case Study of Islamic Education in Finnish Schools

What kinds of process of negotiation are involved in teaching and studying Islam in a modern liberal context? How can the common aims attached to liberal religious education in contemporary European multicultural societies be pursued in single-faith education? This book contributes to the search for legitimate and successful forms of religious education by presenting results from a case study examining Islamic education in Finnish schools. Finnish Islamic education, in which students study their own religion with aims drawn from the liberal educational paradigm, offers a space for negotiating liberal educational values in an Islamic framework and negotiating Islam in its many contexts. The findings demonstrate the possibilities as well as challenges in educating for autonomy, tolerance and citizenship through religion. The book also gives insights into students' negotiations on diversity and tolerance that are important for all involved in any form of multicultural education. These negotiations bring out distinct challenges in dealing with interreligious, intrareligious and cultural differences, and demonstrate how different understandings of tolerance in different ideological frameworks can cause confusion among students. The results lead to a discussion of the educational needs of Muslim students in contemporary Western societies and the competencies their teachers need.

Students were not encouraged to construct their own beliefs but to base their
arguments on the Qur'an and Sunna. Thus, their autonomy was interpreted as the
capability of making an informed decision on whether or not to commit to religion:
