Exploring Worship

Catholic, Evangelical, and Orthodox Perspectives

How we worship determines what we believe. Prosper of Acquitane, a disciple of Augustine, once wrote ""ut legem credendi lex statuat supplicandi,"" the law of prayer determines the law of belief. This is significant for it expresses that how we pray determines what we believe. Exploring Worship engages in a comparative study of Catholic, Evangelical, and Orthodox teachings on corporate worship and suggests classic practices that help deepen the understanding and experience of worship. This is significant in at least four ways. Theologically, it contributes to the important and continuing trialogue among Catholics, Evangelicals, and Orthodox. Historically, it highlights the integrative potential between these three groups, contrary to its history of distrust and outright animosity. Spiritually, many Christians are seeking a deeper devotional expression. Exploring Worship provides an examination of worship rooted in the rich history and traditions of the Church. Pedagogically, this will suggest practices that help deepen the understanding and experience of worship. Exploring Worship invites us to more critically, intentionally, and sympathetically reflect on the ways we worship and its place in our churches. CA] ""All Christians worship God, but they do so in mystifyingly different ways, in a variety of languages, liturgies, theologies, ecclesiologies, and pieties. By examining the worship patterns of Catholic, Evangelical, and Orthodox communities of faith, this comparative study helps us to see the unity that marks the universal Body of Christ scattered throughout time as well as space. It also allows us to consider with candor the distinctive traits of these major faith families and the numerous demarcations within each. A welcome addition to the growing literature on worship!"" --Timothy George Founding Dean Beeson Divinity School ""As interest in liturgical forms of worship continues to grow in Christian circles, the need for accessible and reliable guides to this territory is urgent. Arzola's book is just such a resource. It provides a clear introduction to Catholic, Evangelical, and Orthodox perspectives on worship and encourages mutual respect between them. It also offers practical advice to those seeking deeper devotional expression. This is a timely and helpful book that deserves a wide readership"" --Justyn Terry Dean, President and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Trinity School for Ministry. ""Arzola writes from his educational perspective a basic comparative study of the worship streams of Catholic, Evangelical, and Orthodox Christian traditions. He insightfully advocates for the recovery of essential worship practices that hold the potential for educational integration with lectionary based catechesis. Following Robert Webber's work, he seeks to revive a sense of wonder and mystery in worship for which many hunger today."" --Robert W. Pazmino Valeria Stone Professor of Christian Education Andover Newton Theological School ""Arzola's book represents a primer on worship from four perspectives: Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical, and what he calls a 'Historically Orthodox Evangelical' perspective. Sketching each with broad strokes, it performs a useful service in arguing for a recovery of the Church's traditional lex orandi, or order of worship, while incorporating insights from each tradition."" --Thomas P. Rausch T. Marie Chilton Professor of Catholic Theology Loyola Marymount University ""Not only has Fernando Arzola shown that there is much that Evangelicals could learn from worship traditions other than their own, he has also offered a practical way of appropriating the liturgical resources of these traditions. It is especially useful for Evangelicals looking for something more substantial in their Sunday worship."" --Simon Chan Earnest Lau Professor of Systematic Theology Trinity Theological College in Singapore ""In Church hi

Worship Through the Ages

Through the Ages provides a practical, historical and philosophical study of the Great Spiritual Awakenings as related to the worship of evangelicals around the globe. This is a fascinating story that reveals a unifying, unbroken thread of events whereby one can trace the development of worship practices through the ages. With each move of God came a change in the way people worshiped. New paradigms were created, debated, accepted and passed on to the next generation. Narrative for this study is energized by telling "the story" of engaging personalities, influencers and movers and shakers. Emphasis is given to changes in worship practices from the Early Church, Reformation, the Great Awakenings, revival movements, large evangelistic crusades of the 1940s and 1950s, Jesus Movement, and the Praise and Worship movement. A chart tracing the development of worship from Genesis 4 to the twenty-first century is included.

Idol Worship In Christiany

The Corruption of Faith by Pagan Practices

"Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." (1 John 5:21)Despite this clear commandment, Christian denominations continue to worship idols and follow rituals that do not originate from the Bible. How has the flock wandered so far away from the word of God? Has it intentionally been led astray? In her book Idol Worship in Christianity, Ernestine D Motouom talks about her experiences as a Catholic votary and the realignment of her faith as a born-again Christian. She discusses the gradual corruption of Christian faith through the adoption of pagan practices put forth or initiated by the great apostate and emancipator Nimrod, the grandson of Noah, right after the flood. In Idol Worship in Christianity, she, in the light of the Bible, highlights the true meaning of worship.

Biblical Worship

Theology for God's Glory

A biblical theology of worship spanning both the Old and New Testaments While many books on worship focus on contemporary trends, Biblical Worship plumbs every book of the Bible to uncover its teaching on worship and then applies these insights to our lives and churches today. A team of respected evangelical scholars unearths insights into a variety of issues surrounding worship, including: • The Old Testament concept of worship • Worship before the Exodus • Worship in the Old Testament feasts and celebrations • Worship in the Psalms of Lament and Thanksgiving • The New Testament concept of worship • Worship in the Gospels • Worship in Acts • Worship in the Pastoral Epistles, and much more. Pastors, worship leaders, instructors, and anyone who wants to grow in their knowledge of the Bible's full teaching on worship and how it applies today will benefit from this volume, part of the Biblical Theology for the Church series.

Here, worship followed the Jewish practices but with an expanded canon of sacred texts as the various New Testament documents were increasingly being treated as on a par with the Hebrew Scriptures.26 The question still remains: What ...

Psalms for Preaching and Worship

A Lectionary Commentary

Psalms for Preaching and Worship a key addition to the critically acclaimed three-volume Lectionary Commentary / Despite the rich resources available for studying the Psalms, few are as focused on their place in worship and preaching as is this volume. The responsorial Psalms of the Revised Common Lectionary are here taken up in careful and often illuminating interpretation with attention also to their interaction with other lectionary texts. The many ways that psalms can function meaningfully in the liturgical life of congregations are explored especially in John Witvliet s concluding section. I know of no work that combines practice and substance better than this lectionary commentary. Patrick D. Miller / Princeton Theological Seminary / A fascinating book well organized, well written and edited, thorough, and informative. . . . An excellent resource not only for preachers using the Revised Common Lectionary but also for those wishing to preach a series of sermons on the Psalms. In addition, worship leaders and worship committees will appreciate the many excellent ideas for using the Psalms in worship. Highly recommended. Sidney Greidanus / author of Preaching Christ from the Old Testament and Preaching Christ from Genesis / Here is something even better than a simple completion of The Lectionary Commentary, which would be cause enough for gratitude. . . . Serious attention paid to this one book could go a long way toward remedying the scandalous neglect of the treasure of the Psalms in too much contemporary worship. Marguerite Shuster / Fuller Theological Seminary / Contributors: Nancy R. Bowen, William P. Brown, Walter Brueggemann, Richard J. Clifford, Nancy L. deClaiss-Walford, Jennifer S. Green, Karl N. The Design of Instruments for Government Finance in an Islamic Economy

This paper presents perhaps the most viable approach for the design of an instrument of government finance (and monetary management) in an Islamic economy where conventional transactions based on an ex-ante promise of a risk-free rate of return are forbidden. Resources to finance government infrastructural and development projects can be mobilized by issuing a national participation paper and this instrument can also serve as an instrument of monetary management. The paper discusses various conceptional issues underpinning the introduction of such an instrument and methods of calculating a corresponding rate of return. In principle, this approach has been accepted by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
