Sport and Social Movements

From the Local to the Global

From neighborhood coalitions organizing against the building of a sport facility for professional sports teams subsidized by public funds, to global campaigns for equity for women in sport, to worldwide bans of apartheid regimes, sites and levels of protest, resistance and activism have been present throughout the history of sport. Contentious forms of collective actions are now ever more present in various forms at the local, the national and the global levels. Sport and Social Movements: From the Local to the Global is the first book-length treatment of the way social movements have intersected and continue to intersect with sport. It traces the history of various social movements associated with labour, women, peace, the environment and rights (civil, racial, disability and sexual), and their relationship to sport and sports mega-events such as the Olympic Games. Based on research conducted by a multinational team of authors that draws on theories of social movements and new social movements, the book includes a valuable chronology of social movements, illustrations of key episodes in the development of the relationships between sport and different social movements and an agenda for future research and scholarship. Written in a clear and comprehensive style it is suitable for all levels of higher education, researchers and the general reader who want to know more about the role that sport has played in the development of social movements and campaigns for social justice.

Social Movements in a Global Context

Canadian Perspectives

Social Movements in a Global Context focuses on interpreting the resurgence in popular protest for a growing audience of university students. Most of this new activity is either in response to or makes use of emerging global regimes -- hence, the book's emphasis on the global context as well as on strategies for trans-local mobilization. Equally important is the fact that the book adopts a Canadian perspective and highlights, where possible, Canadian case studies. The chapters are organized around an explanatory framework, such as class analysis, or a core analytical question. Some of the chapters deal with historical content, but all make links to the immediate present and attempt to engage students in ongoing debates and struggles. The author makes connections between movements and the state, focusing on the dynamic of co-optation/coercion. The author also pays attention to the spacial dimensions of movement formation and tactics, which are particularly relevant in the present era of globalization.

Leadership and Social Movements

Despite the explosion of social movement research in Europe and the US in the last 20 years, the question of leadership has been relatively neglected. This probing examination of the theory and practice of social movement leadership critically re-examines a series of classic cases. The essays illuminate the complex dynamics and competing forms taken by social movement leadership as well as its impact on movement successes and failures.

Handbook of Social Movements Across Disciplines

This book aims to revisit the interdisciplinary roots of social movement studies. Each discipline raises its own questions and approaches the subject from a different angle or perspective. The chapters of this handbook are written by internationally renowned scholars representing the various disciplines involved. They each review the approach their sector has developed and discuss their disciplines’ contributions and insights to the knowledge of social movements. Furthermore, each chapter addresses the "unanswered questions" and discusses the overlaps with other fields as well as reviewing the interdisciplinary advances so far.

Gerakan Pemuda Ansor

GERAKAN KOMUNISME ISLAM SURAKARTA 1914-1942
