Essentials of Gifted Assessment

A comprehensive guide to identifying and supporting uniquely bright and talented learners Early identification and intervention greatly benefits gifted students who may otherwise never realize their full potential. Essentials of Gifted Assessment is an evidence-based overview of what makes students gifted, how giftedness is best identified, and strategies for promoting achievement in high-ability students. Author Steven Pfeiffer is a leading expert in the field of gifted assessment and in Essentials of Gifted Assessment he presents his influential tripartite model of giftedness. This model goes well beyond the 20th-century focus on IQ scores, taking into account achievement and potential in a variety of areas for a more nuanced and practical perspective. With reference to this and other models, Essentials of Gifted Assessment reviews a range of assessment tools for their research-supported validity and clinical utility. Each chapter contains self-test questions and quick-reference boxes that facilitate both retention of new information and later review. Steven Pfeiffer has also dedicated a chapter to answering the most Frequently Asked Questions about gifted assessment. Exceptionally Gifted Children

Exceptionally Gifted Children is unique. The first edition of this book, published in 1993, introduced 15 remarkable children, some of the most gifted young people ever studied, and traced their path through school, exploring their academic achievements (and in some cases enforced underachievement), their emotional development, their social relationships and their family relationships and upbringing. This new edition reviews these early years but also follows the young people over the subsequent ten years into adulthood. No previous study has traced so closely and so sensitively the intellectual, social and emotional development of highly gifted young people. This 20 year study reveals the ongoing negative academic and social effects of prolonged underachievement and social isolation imposed on gifted children by inappropriate curriculum and class placement and shows clearly the long lasting benefits of thoughtfully planned individual educational programs. The young adults of this study speak out and show how what happened in school has influenced and still influences many aspects of their lives. Miraca Gross provides a clear, practical blueprint for teachers and parents who recognise the special learning needs of gifted children and seek to respond effectively.

English Language Learners are increasingly underidentified for gifted programs, although many of them possess high academic abilities and have a high motivation to learn and succeed in school. The Gifted Child in Peer Group Perspective

An Applied Psychologist's Initiation to the Study of Gifted Children My interest in the subject matter of this book, the peer relations of gifted children, intensified enormously as result of my' involvement with one gifted child during my days as a school psychologist. At that time, I served a number of schools in a prosperous suburb. I spent most of my time working with children with behavioral and learning disorders. I received very few requests to assist gifted youngsters and their teachers, perhaps because, at that point, I was not very sensitive to their needs. One autumn I was involved in something from which I derived a great deal of satisfaction-helping the teachers of a very advanced retarded boy with Down's syndrome maintain himself in a regular first-grade class. In retrospect, the achievements of this student, Jeff, would have justified my calling him exceptionally bright, given the limits of his endowment. I was interrupted from my observation of Jeff's success in class by a phone call from another school, one to which I had not previously been summoned. I was asked to discuss the case of an intellectually gifted child who was bored, moody, difficult, and disliked by those around him.
