Gesture-Based Communication in Human-Computer Interaction

5th International Gesture Workshop, GW 2003, Genova, Italy, April 15-17, 2003, Selected Revised Papers

Research on the multifaceted aspects of modeling, analysis, and synthesis of - man gesture is receiving growing interest from both the academic and industrial communities. On one hand, recent scienti?c developments on cognition, on - fect/emotion, on multimodal interfaces, and on multimedia have opened new perspectives on the integration of more sophisticated models of gesture in c- putersystems.Ontheotherhand, theconsolidationofnewtechnologiesenabling “disappearing” computers and (multimodal) interfaces to be integrated into the natural environments of users are making it realistic to consider tackling the complex meaning and subtleties of human gesture in multimedia systems, - abling a deeper, user-centered, enhanced physical participation and experience in the human-machine interaction process. The research programs supported by the European Commission and s- eral national institutions and governments individuated in recent years strategic ?elds strictly concerned with gesture research. For example, the DG Infor- tion Society of the European Commission (www.cordis.lu/ist) supports several initiatives, such as the “Disappearing Computer” and “Presence” EU-IST FET (Future and Emerging Technologies), the IST program “Interfaces & Enhanced Audio-Visual Services” (see for example the project MEGA, Multisensory - pressive Gesture Applications, www.megaproject.org), and the IST strategic - jective “Multimodal Interfaces.” Several EC projects and other funded research are represented in the chapters of this book. Awiderangeofapplicationscanbene?tfromadvancesinresearchongesture, from consolidated areas such as surveillance to new or emerging ?elds such as therapy and rehabilitation, home consumer goods, entertainment, and aud- visual, cultural and artistic applications, just to mention only a few of them.

15th Americas Conference on Information Systems, AMCIS 2009, SIGeBIZ track, San Francisco, CA, USA, August 6-9, 2009, Selected Papers

Recent economic, political, and technological forces are changing the landscape of electronic business and electronic commerce. Although great strides have been made over the past in understanding, researching and advancing e-business, rarely have we witnessed its use so profound and yet its limitations so pronounced, than what has been on global public display for the past 18 months. As a result, new e-commerce strategies and techniques are emerging, collaborative value creation is essential and e-business models are being refined and developed, with special attention towards IS in financial markets, health care and related institutions. It is for these reasons (and many more) that we are so particularly excited and grateful for the collection of papers included in this Value Creation in e-Business Management LNBIP volume number 36. The papers selected in this volume address these emerging e-business issues and are organized into four research lines: Business Models for the Digital Economy, Electronic and Mobile Commerce Behavioral and Global Issues, IS in Financial M- kets and Institutions, Web 2. 0 and E-Commerce and Collaborative Value Creation. The first group, Business Models for the Digital Economy, provides a closer exami- tion of business models from a rich mixture of segments in the IT industry. They - clude Hoyer and Stanoevska-Slabeva’s business model types for enterprise mashup intermediaries, Riehle’s ‘commercial’ open source business model, Chen’s interesting comparison between i-Phone versus Kindles in electronic book sales, and Lyons and coauthors business models in emerging online services.

Cultural and Islamic Adaptation of Psychology

A Book of Collected Papers

The indiscriminate exportation of Western psychology to Muslim and third world countries can pose serious cultural and ideological dilemmas. When the exported commodity from North to South is physical in nature, the harm done can easily be identified; for example the quick detection of the life threatening birth defects caused by the drug thalidomide when taken during pregnancy or the flaws in the breaking system of a Japanese car. However, when the exported product is ideas and beliefs and ways of life, the indirect and sneaky damage, is often much more malevolent and long-lasting because it attacks the worldview of the recipients and it shakes their cherished beliefs. Because of the technological supremacy of the West, Islamic and developing countries got used to wholeheartedly accepting any information coming from Europe and the US, particularly if it is exported under the tag of “science”. By presenting itself under this prestigious ‘mantra’, students in Muslim countries swallow the kernel of psychology with its nutshell; the baby with its filthy water. The danger of this approach is greatly augmented by the shortcomings of our educational systems that discourages critical thinking and encourages the submissive acceptance of the words of the teacher and that of printed material
