International Comparison of Pension Systems

An Investigation from Consumers’ Viewpoint

This book is about retirement income security. This income security is provided by national public pensions, corporate pensions, and individual and reverse mortgages. However, these systems vary greatly from country to country and, in many countries, do not provide sufficient coverage. Ensuring income security in old age is an important issue that must be resolved in the rapidly aging environment of the world. From the perspective of financial consumers, this book cross-sectionally surveys public pensions, corporate pensions, individual pensions and reverse mortgages and compares them among many important nations. This gives many implications from the perspective of designing an overall income security for each individual. In addition, it presents many of the issues needed for these sustainable and comprehensive income security.

Private Management and Public Policy

The Principle of Public Responsibility

Private Management and Public Policy is a landmark work at the intersection of business and society. First published in 1975, it focuses on the management processes that companies use to respond to social issues. The text develops the "principle of public responsibility" as an alternative to the notion that firms have unlimited accountability. And, it presents one of the first systems-based approaches to corporate responsibility, providing theoretical support for business involvement in public policy. Arguably, the book's major contribution is its broad outline of an alternative theory of the firm in society—one that offers the possibility of overcoming traditional public and private dichotomies.

New Scenarios for Teacher Education

The guiding idea of this book concerns the nature of teacher education in the future, viewing the understanding of the history of teacher education in different context as the basis for future development. Special emphasis is given to matters of race and gender as well as on the special status and roles of teacher education in a globalized, uncertain, and anxiety-ridden world. Viewing teacher education as drama provides lenses and insights for the construction of teacher education. The book is divided into two parts. Part I is entitled Teacher education in the service of change. This part presents cases of the role of teacher education in reform movements in different cultures, and the impact of social changes across time on teacher education. Part II, A look into the future: societal issues in teacher education, focuses on several critical societal issues such as racism, feminism and environmental sustainability.

The Palgrave Handbook of Teacher Education in Central and Eastern Europe

This handbook provides a comprehensive, scholarly overview of teacher education in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), since the fall of communism in 1989. It looks closely at recent trends, emerging practices, and possible futures for teacher education in twenty-one CEE countries – reaching from the Balkans, through the Visegrad Group, to Eastern Europe and the Baltics. The contributing authors reflect on their own countries’ uphill battles and journeys towards modernising teacher education over the last three decades. Subsequently, contemporary teacher education policies, structures, and practices are explored in light of Bologna reforms, EU higher education policies, and globalisation processes. Each chapter also offers some predictions about likely future trajectories – with concrete suggestions on how to develop and improve teacher education systems in response to the growing pressures of neoliberal ideologies. The Palgrave Handbook of Teacher Education in Central and Eastern Europe provides a valuable reference that enriches the work of scholars, students, policymakers, and practitioners across CEE and beyond.

Teacher Education in Times of Change

Why is teacher education policy significant - politically, sociologically and educationally? While the importance of practice in teacher education has long been recognised, the significance of policy has only been fully appreciated more recently. Teacher education in times of change offers a critical examination of teacher education policy in the UK and Ireland over the past three decades, since the first intervention of government in the curriculum. Written by a research group from five countries, it makes international comparisons, and covers broader developments in professional learning, to place these key issues and lessons in a wider context.
