Legal Philosophy

General Aspects : Theoretical Examinations and Practical Application, Proceedings of the 19th World Congress of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR), New York, June 24-30, 1999

Many recent political and economic transformations pose difficult questions of legal and social theory. Yet, although these questions are now raised with new urgency, the basic questions are not new. They have long been central features of legal and social philosophy in its most general form. What principles explain or justify legal institutions or decisions, thereby transforming coercion to authority? Are there or could there be any such universal principles? Can any philosophical theory account for such principles? How, if at all, do philosophical theories of law and politics apply to particular issues? And finally, what, if any, do such practical applications tell us about general theories and principles? The essays in this volume represent the efforts of an international group of scholars to understand these general aspects of legal philosophy.

Internasionalisasi Muhammadiyah

The Empire in Transition: The Caliphates of Sulayman, 'Umar, and Yazid A.D. 715-724/A.H. 97-105

In this volume, which covers the caliphates of Sulayman, 'Umar II, and Yazid II, al-Tabari provides vivid and detailed accounts of the events spanning the period from 97-105/715-724. We listen to the stirring speeches of Qutaybah b. Muslim, in which he urges his followers to renounce their allegiance to Sulayman; are present at the disastrous third and final attempt to take Constantinople; watch from behind the scenes as Raja'b. Haywah skillfully engineers the accession of 'Umar II; and follow the remarkable career of Yazid b. al-Muhallab, first as governor and conqueror, then as prisoner, and finally as rebel. Throughout this volume we observe the struggle of the Umayyad regime to maintain control over a rapidly expanding but increasingly dissatisfied subject population. Governors are appointed and dismissed with dizzying rapidity, administrative boundaries are drawn and redrawn, Arab tribesmen express dissatisfaction with the diminishing rewards of military conquest, non-Arab converts chafe at the differential treatment they receive, and religious opponents revolt in the name of "the Book and the Sunnah." Important in their own right, the events of this period provide an essential key to a proper understanding of the 'Abbasid revolution that lay just over the horizon. Applications of Inductive Logic

Proceedings of a Conference at the Queen's College, Oxford 21-24, August 1978

To substantiate his claim that mathematical probability is no good , or at best limited , in the context of legal reasoning , Cohen brings forward some hard cases , one of which he dubs the gatecrasher paradox of legal reasoning .
