Garam merupakan barang/komoditas produk pertanian yang mempunyai peranan penting dalam kehidupan sehari-hari maupun dalam sektor industri. Kebutuhan garam di Indonesia dari tahun ke tahun semakin meningkat seiring dengan bertambahnya penduduk dan berkembangnya industri di Indonesia. Ada banyak faktor yang diperkirakan berkontribusi terhadap rendahnya produktivitas garam di Indonesia yaitu faktor fisik dan nonfisik. Faktor fisik di antaranya yaitu cuaca, luas lahan, luas meja garam, metode produksi, lama penjemuran, teknologi yang digunakan. Faktor nonfisik meliputi sarana produksi dan keterampilan petani. Penelitian yang disajikan dalam buku ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif dengan mengambil sampel petani di Kabupaten Pati. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan variabel umur dan keterampilan berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap produktivitas usaha garam. Umur berperan penting terhadap produktivitas usaha garam, setiap aktivitas dalam proses pembuatan garam yang memerlukan tenaga besar dan fisik yang kuat. Ketika mencapai umur tua maka akan cenderung meningkatkan kelelahan, fungsi faal tubuh berubah yang berdampak pada ketahanan tubuh dan kapasitas kerjanya. Seseorang yang mempunyai keterampilan yang lebih baik tentu akan memudahkannya dalam menghadapi masalah yang timbul dan akan meningkatkan kualitas produk. Inilah yang menyebabkan produktivitas meningkat.
