Perspectives, Opportunities and Challenges

Chapter one will review teacher development in Sudanese state primary schools, as well as the poor resources available to teachers. It discusses the need for teacher development and training to help with the transition to a new curriculum written for these schools, and the challenges faced by the teachers, as the new curriculum is quite different from the previous one taught in state schools.This chapter describes a case study using a qualitative ethnographic research methodology that examines the significant role of developing resilience and grit within a pre-service teacher education program.Chapter three discusses the broad interface between the concepts of agency, professional identity and creative insubordination. It presents discussions about the agency and professional identity of teachers in narrating their actions of creative insubordination. It aims to map and analyze written narratives, identifying insubordinate actions revealed by teachers teaching mathematics and discuss how these attitudes, incorporated into teaching practice, contributed to the effectiveness of teaching statistics in their mathematics classes in Elementary School.The following chapter will employ a critical analysis of an instrumental theory-building pre-service teacher case-study as the foundation of a theoretical-based, cyclical, self-reflective teacher cultural competence professional development model.In this chapter, attention will be paid to the modern environment, which is a complex phenomenon revealing many interesting trends. The spate of events, civilization's progress, the cult of performing different tasks, and professional duties all disrupt the rhythm of work and rest. These disproportions take their toll on everyday existence in the teacher`s profession.The final chapter uses evidence from reports prepared for governments' quality agencies, plus papers and seminars given by the author, to document the changing face of teacher education in Lithuanian and Latvia, from 2003 to date.

State control vs marketization

Since the Teacher Education Act was in place in 1994, student teachers were educated through diverse educational institutions instead of the traditional normal schools (Taiwan’s equivalent of teachers’ colleges). But such market-based teacher education has been altered by politics, society and culture in the direction of government-controlled teacher education, particularly in the quality evaluation of teacher education. Taiwan maintains teacher education quality by controlling the number of teachers, using teacher assessment to eliminate teachers who are not up to standard, evaluating teacher education institutions, evaluating professional development of teachers to raise elementary and secondary teacher quality. This book uses Taiwan as a case study to analyze the transformation of teacher education in a country which goes through political, economic and societal transitions, along the axis of state regulation vs marketization. It analyzes the uniqueness of Taiwanese teacher education for international reference, and draws implications for teacher education policies in the context of education reform. Understanding the Relationship Between Teacher Education, Teacher Effectiveness, and Student Outcomes

By drawing on quantitative data and qualitative analyses of five major national education policies implemented in India over the last 15 years, this comprehensive volume explores their impact on teacher quality and perceived effectiveness, explaining how this relates to variations in student performance. Responding to a national agenda to increase the quality of the Indian teacher workforce, Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India critically questions the application of human capital theory to Indian education policy. Chapters provide in-depth and strategically structured analyses of five national policies – including the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – to see how Indian policymakers use teacher quality as a driver and measurement of education and national economic development. Ultimately, the text offers evidence-based policy recommendations to improve teacher quality in India, suggesting that while all five policies have contributed significant frameworks and recommendations for teacher quality reform, they have failed to move beyond a symbolic function. Given its rigorous methodological approach, this book will be a valuable addition to the under-researched question of education policymaking in postcolonial contexts. The Politics of Teacher Professional Development: Policy, Research and Practice provides innovative insights into teachers’ continuing development and learning in contemporary western contexts. Rather than providing a list of "how-tos" and "must dos," this volume is premised on the understanding that by learning more about the current conditions under which teachers and other educators work and learn, it is possible to understand, and consequently improve, the learning opportunities teachers experience. Teacher professional development is not simply construed as an isolated series of events, such as day-long workshops marking the beginning of each school year or term, or individualistic "one-off" activities focused on new teaching approaches, curricula or assessment strategies. Rather, through application of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s understanding of social practices as contested, teacher professional development is revealed as a complex social practice which exists as policy, as a research product and process, and as an important part of teachers’ work. The book reveals how PD as policy, research and teachers’ work are inherently contested. An extended series of case studies of teacher professional development practices from Canada, England and Australia are employed to show how these tensions play out in complex ways in policy and practice.

The school has a population of about seven hundred pupils with seventeen teachers - all certificate holders. Nine of the teachers are members of the English panel who have been in the profession for over ten years but have not undergone any professional learning. These teachers continue to implement traditional methods of teaching they have utilized since the start of their career. Adding to this is the highly individualistic nature of teaching in my station resulting in limited access to new ideas. There are currently no programs that exist to bring together experienced teachers to study effective teaching practices. This paper describes a plan of action for continuous teacher learning through collaborative reflective practice as a way through which English teachers in my station can systematically improve instruction and decrease teacher isolation."
