Pemecahan masalah merupakan fokus pembelajaran matematika yang artinya sebelum siswa belajar rumus-rumus harus melalui sesuatu yang berkaitan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari yang masalahnya bersifat tertutup atau terbuka. Dalam setiap kesempatan pembelajaran matematika hendaknya dimulai dengan pengenalan masalah yang sesuai dengan situasi nyata atau yang dikenal siswa. Salah satu aktivitas pembelajaran yang membantu siswa untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi dan pemecahan masalah melalui pengajuan masalah autentik adalah pembelajaran berdasarkan masalah (PBL). Atas dasar filosofi itulah buku ini disusun, untuk menambah khazanah pengetahuan para pendidik dalam menggunakan pendekatan model pembelajaran berdasarkan masalah.
