Essentials of Behavioral Research

Methods and Data Analysis

This is a classic advanced undergraduate/graduate text in research methods which requires statistics as a prerequisite. The first half of the text concentrates on research methods and the second half introduces students to advanced statistical procedures.

Research Design and Statistical Analysis

Third Edition

Research Design and Statistical Analysis provides comprehensive coverage of the design principles and statistical concepts necessary to make sense of real data. The book’s goal is to provide a strong conceptual foundation to enable readers to generalize concepts to new research situations. Emphasis is placed on the underlying logic and assumptions of the analysis and what it tells the researcher, the limitations of the analysis, and the consequences of violating assumptions. Sampling, design efficiency, and statistical models are emphasized throughout. As per APA recommendations, emphasis is also placed on data exploration, effect size measures, confidence intervals, and using power analyses to determine sample size. "Real-world" data sets are used to illustrate data exploration, analysis, and interpretation. The book offers a rare blend of the underlying statistical assumptions, the consequences of their violations, and practical advice on dealing with them. Changes in the New Edition: Each section of the book concludes with a chapter that provides an integrated example of how to apply the concepts and procedures covered in the chapters of the section. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of alternative designs are discussed. A new chapter (1) reviews the major steps in planning and executing a study, and the implications of those decisions for subsequent analyses and interpretations. A new chapter (13) compares experimental designs to reinforce the connection between design and analysis and to help readers achieve the most efficient research study. A new chapter (27) on common errors in data analysis and interpretation. Increased emphasis on power analyses to determine sample size using the G*Power 3 program. Many new data sets and problems. More examples of the use of SPSS (PASW) Version 17, although the analyses exemplified are readily carried out by any of the major statistical software packages. A companion website with the data used in the text and the exercises in SPSS and Excel formats; SPSS syntax files for performing analyses; extra material on logistic and multiple regression; technical notes that develop some of the formulas; and a solutions manual and the text figures and tables for instructors only. Part 1 reviews research planning, data exploration, and basic concepts in statistics including sampling, hypothesis testing, measures of effect size, estimators, and confidence intervals. Part 2 presents between-subject designs. The statistical models underlying the analysis of variance for these designs are emphasized, along with the role of expected mean squares in estimating effects of variables, the interpretation of nteractions, and procedures for testing contrasts and controlling error rates. Part 3 focuses on repeated-measures designs and considers the advantages and disadvantages of different mixed designs. Part 4 presents detailed coverage of correlation and bivariate and multiple regression with emphasis on interpretation and common errors, and discusses the usefulness and limitations of these procedures as tools for prediction and for developing theory. This is one of the few books with coverage sufficient for a 2-semester course sequence in experimental design and statistics as taught in psychology, education, and other behavioral, social, and health sciences. Incorporating the analyses of both experimental and observational data provides continuity of concepts and notation. Prerequisites include courses on basic research methods and statistics. The book is also an excellent resource for practicing researchers.

Strategic Marketing of Higher Education in Africa

Strategic Marketing of Higher Education in Africa explores higher education marketing themes along the lines of understanding higher education markets, university branding and international marketing strategies, digital marketing, and student choice-making. The Higher Education landscape around the world is changing. There is global competition for students' enrolments, universities are competing within their home market as well as in the international market, and as government funding for public universities is reducing there is pressure on universities to seek additional income by increasing their student enrolment. African universities are not an exception in this competitive market. This book is unique in providing a composite overview of strategic marketing and brand communications of higher education institutions in Africa. It recognises that there is a growing need for universities to understand the stakeholders and develop strategies on how best to engage with them effectively. Highlighting the unique characteristics, nature, and challenges of African universities, this book explores the marketisation strategies of African universities, with focus on the strategic digital marketing and brand management. The book provides significant theoretical and marketing practice implications for academics, higher-education administrators, and practitioners on how best to market higher education in Africa and reach out to prospective students. International practitioners aiming to market to Africans and start a partnership with an African university will also find this relevant in understanding the dynamics of the African market.

Digital Television and Communication Systems

Digital Television Basics

This is the first book in a collection of six volumes dedicated to covering all aspects related to audio / video broadcasting systems, both theoretical and practical, which are in use today. The text starts with the explanation of the communication process through sounds and images, moving on to the in-depth study of the physical and psychological characteristics of this information to arrive at the construction of the related electrical, analog and digital signals, which are the basis of current communication systems. After the description. Limitations and history of television systems (PAL, NTSC and SECAM) The text goes into the details of the construction of current high definition signals and dedicates an in-depth study on the relative digital audio and video compression techniques, from the origins to the most sophisticated current techniques .The text contains all the basic information necessary for the cultural background for anyone who operates or wants to operate in television broadcast systems at a professional level, providing them with complete support for operational and system choices to obtain the technical quality of their desired product. The book is also a great reference point for anyone tackling high school and college studies related to digital audio and video signals.

Science, Philosophy & the Christian-Islam Ideological Crisis

Decades of research by the authors provides their insights on a wide spectrum of Words of Wisdom, from seventy-five scholars: scientists, philosophers, and theologians. They guide readers through a maze of newly discovered scientific facts, philosophical ideas and theories that led civilization to where we are today. In every heart, there are questions that transcend all differences of culture, nationality, race or religion: Who am I? Where do I come from, and where am I going? Why is there evil in the world? What will there be after this life? With the stakes of our choices in life so high, it would be prudent to make every effort to choose correctly, especially your Worldview. That takes truth and knowledge from many sources, which fortunately today is more readily available. In this dialogue on the key issues that have divided Science and Faith, such as the Creation of the Universe, the Origin of Life and Mankind, Free Will, Consciousness, and Islam vs. Christianity, these writers conclude that Science, Philosophy and the Bible are not only compatible, they are mutually supporting. There is an Ideological War raging between fanatical Islamic and Christian thinking. Muslims will represent one-third of the worlds population by 2050. We had better find a solution to this serious ideological divide. The literalist reading of the Koran and Christian reading of the Bible misconstrues the true meaning of these holy texts. An open dialogue and debate between leading Islamic and Christian scholars might be the best approach to create a reformist movement (like the Reformation in the 16th century) with the next generation of young Muslims. Whatever you do (or dont do) in life, has Eternal Consequences!
