A Model of Teacher Professional Development

The Partnership in Primary Science Project

Teacher professional development is usually directed and governed by three agents: politics, pedagogy and innovation. The book begins by considering existing literature and ideas on teacher professional development. Chapter two briefly outlines some of the issues in science education that are of relevance to primary school science while also examining the PIPS model of teacher professional development. Subsequent chapters focus on the methodology employed by the project including details of the evaluation, as the data collected was instrumental in determining influential facets of the project. The following chapters explore the notion of readiness, risk, reflection, recognition, resource and relevance. These were deemed to be key elements that contributed to the success of the project in terms of promoting professional development and in terms of seeing tangible change in classroom practice. There is a short chapter which outlines some of the other project findings and the book concludes with a chapter on the need and challenge for dynamic teacher professional development programmes that work in partnership with teachers rather than deliver things for teachers.

Professional Development of Teacher Educators in Further Education critically analyses the specific challenges relating to teacher educators in the English further education (FE), such as the diverse nature of learners and the variety of educational contexts. It focuses on the journeys to becoming teacher educators, their relevant teaching know-how and professional needs. This book combines theoretical frameworks with both qualitative and quantitative data to outline the pathways, professional identities, knowledge, and continuous professional development of teacher educators. ESP teaching and teacher education: current theories and practices

ESP Teaching and Teacher Education: current theories and practices​, supported by the Language Centre of the Cyprus University of Technology, puts together a selection of ten chapters concentrating on ESP teacher education and ESP teaching methodology, including the integration of new technologies in both fields. The Implementation of Teacher Evaluation for Professional Development in Primary Education in Taiwan

Teacher evaluation is an activity of assessing teachers' performance. It is equivalent to teacher appraisal/teacher performance management in England. This study explores the complexities of implementing Teacher Evaluation in primary schools in Taiwan. It concentrates principally on the development of Teacher Evaluation in Taiwan in the light of international research, especially that relating to the English context. The philosophical perspective with which this study is most closely aligned is constructivism. In particular, using qualitative methods of documentary analysis and interviews, it explores the nature of Teacher Evaluation and the meaning held by implementers. Government publications, including books, journals and other documentation from public institutions were examined to trace the development of Teacher Evaluation in Taiwan, and how it might be influenced by globalisation. Interviews were carried out with 3 head teachers and 7 teachers from 3 primary schools in Taiwan and 3 officers from different levels of official organisations. A Recommended Model of Teacher Evaluation was synthesised from the review of international research. Using the Recommended Model of Teacher Evaluation to evaluate the implementation of Teacher Evaluation for Professional Development in Taiwan, the effectiveness of the project was demonstrated. However, by looking at the empirical data, some limitations were observed, including deficiencies in the administrative system, teachers' heavy workload, the reluctance of teachers to accept changes, and insufficient knowledge of the relevant policy. Other obstacles were noted, including inadequately trained evaluators, the lack of a mechanism for professional dialogue, and the incoherence of the educational policy. This study shows that most teachers agree with the measures in the Teacher Evaluation for Professional Development implemented by the Ministry of Education, although some supplementary measures need to be established in a more sophisticated manner before it can be implemented fully. Finally, this study further proposes suggestions for a Teacher Evaluation model based on the Recommended Model of Teacher Evaluation, the implementation of the current Teacher Evaluation for Professional Development, and ideal models mentioned by the interviewees.

Teaching Statistics in School Mathematics-Challenges for Teaching and Teacher Education results from the Joint ICMI/IASE Study Teaching Statistics in School Mathematics: Challenges for Teaching and Teacher Education. Oriented to analyse the teaching of statistics in school and to recommend improvements in the training of mathematics teachers to encourage success in preparing statistically literate students, the volume provides a picture of the current situation in both the teaching of school statistics and the pre-service education of mathematics teachers. A primary goal of Teaching Statistics in School Mathematics-Challenges for Teaching and Teacher Education is to describe the essential elements of statistics, teacher’s professional knowledge and their learning experiences.
