Teacher Quality

Sustained Coordination Among Key Federal Education Programs Could Enhance State Efforts to Improve Teacher Quality

Policymakers and researchers have focused on improving the quality of our nation's 3 million teachers to raise the achievement of students in key academic areas, such as reading and mathematics. Given the importance of teacher quality to student achievement and the key role federal and state governments play in supporting teacher quality, the objectives for this report included examining: (1) the extent that the U.S. Dept. of Education (DoE) funds and coordinates teacher quality programs; (2) studies that DoE conducts on teacher quality and how it provides and coordinates research-related assistance to states and school districts; and (3) challenges to collaboration within states and how DoE helps address those challenges. Enhancing Practice Through Classroom Research

A Teacher's Guide to Professional Development

"Enhancing Practice through Classroom Research addresses the growing trend in educational contexts for teachers to engage in CPD and develop as excellent practitioners. It a guide for teachers, by teachers, on how to improve practice - and understanding of practice - through a personal process of reflection, research and action. The book will provide much needed guidance for teachers engaged in postgraduate studies in reflective practice and professional development, and structured around real life examples of research undertaken by teachers, it will be highly supportive for teachers in the classroom interested in small-scale research projects. The book presents a framework beginning and developing research, in four key sections: Section one deals with reflection on practice, exploring concerns about practice and identifying values; section two examines ideas around why practitioners might be concerned about their practice; section three outlines how readers can develop a personal action plan and gather data to show any changes or possible improvements in their work; the final section shows how readers can draw on the evidence they have produced to develop their own personal theory of education. It covers key issues central to effective professional development and improving practice in the classroom: Understanding the concept of the professional and reflecting on how values inform practice Identifying critical questions such as why you teach as you do Deciding how to investigate the issues you've identified developing a research plan and collecting data Interpreting and making meaning from data writing up each stage of your research. Each section includes two chapters, the first describing real life experiences of researching and reflection in the classroom, giving the reader the opportunity to use the studies to think critically and reflect on their own practice. The second chapter explains a specific stage of the research process project and its rationale, and includes tasks throughout for readers to undertake to encourage reflection"-- Provided by publisher.

Teacher Education Partnerships

Policy and Practice

This book supports all those involved in initial teacher education (ITE) and with an interest in partnership working. Such partnerships are at the heart of ITE practices, both in the UK and internationally, but more recently models of partnership have become ever more complex as a result of government reforms, the rapid diversification of routes into teaching and significant increase in the number of SCITTs. The nature of partnerships in ITE remains contested with partnership working often reduced to a series of prescriptions for effective practice, ignoring both its pedagogic potential and inherent tensions. This book surveys and critiques partnership developments in recent years and then analyses a single case study of a school that exemplifies the current complexity of ITE partnerships using both policy and practice perspectives. It concludes with a series of principles that might underpin effective partnership working.

School adoption in teacher education

Increasing pre-service teachers' responsibility during practice

School adoption is an ambitious and innovative partnership model in teacher education which offers unique opportunities for in-service and pre-service teachers. At its core, teachers leave their school to be adopted by teacher students for one week. While the teachers engage in a professional development course outside the school, they are fully substituted by teacher students, who thus have an increased responsibility for the pupils’ learning, for the organizational matters of the school and for their own professional development. In this volume, we present different international concepts of school adoption, lessons learned, and first theoretical considerations. With it, we invite teacher educators in schools, universities, and other institutions to engage into a dialogue about the perspectives school adoption offers for teacher education and teacher education research.
