Towards a Fiqh for Minorities

Some Basic Reflections

Towards a Fiqh for Minorities is an important subject and a much needed contribution to an area of fiqh that has become essential for the wellbeing and development of Muslim communities living in the West. The author stresses that the problems of Muslim minorities can only be tackled with a fresh juristic vision based on the principles, objectives and higher values of the Qur’an in conjunction with the ultimate aims and intents (maqasid) of the Shariah. In essence Dr. Al-Alwani’s paper is a call for Muslim minorities to have a sense of themselves as citizens and develop a positive, confident view of their place and value in society, moving away from notions of immigrant status and governed by a humanistic vision focusing on the betterment of society.

Umm Salamah reported that Ja¢far ibn AbÏ >¥lib answered him and said: “O King, we were a people living in ignorance, worshipping idols, eating carrion meat, committing sins, forsaking our kinsfolk and abusing our neighbors.

Morals and Mysticism in Persian Sufism

A History of Sufi-futuwwat in Iran

Sufism is often understood to be the mystical dimension of Islam, and many works have focused on the nature of "mystical experiences" and the relationship between man and God. Yet Sufism was a human response to a wide range of contexts and circumstances; the fact that Sufis lived in society and interacted with the community necessitating guidance on how to behave. This book examines the development of Persian Sufism, showing it to be a practical philosophy of the everyday rather than just a metaphysical phenomena. The author explores the ethic of futuwwat (or jawanmardi), an Iranian code of honour that emphasised loyalty, humility, generosity and bravery. Although inevitably some Sufis spiritualised this code of honour and applied it to their own relationship with God, the ethic continued to permeate Sufi behaviour on a more mundane level, typified by the strong links between Sufis and certain trades. Drawing on field research in Iran, as well as detailed analysis of both Arabic and Persian texts and new materials that have been published in Iran in recent years, this is the first book in English to provide a history of Persian Sufi-futuwwat, As such, this book is an important contribution to the study of Persian Sufism, and to the fields of Islam, history and religion.

This book examines the development of Persian Sufism and in particular its relationship with Javanmardi.

A Sufi Study of Hadith

A Translation of At-Tasharruf and Haqiqat at-Tariqa

A Sufi Study of Hadith (Originally titled Haqiqa al-Tariqa min as-Sunna al-Aniqa) is a unique work of commentary on a selection of over three hundred authentic hadith. Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi, one of the subcontinent's greatest spiritual leaders and an author of unequalled prolificacy, translates, interprets, and then comments on each hadith from the perspective of tasawwuf, whether to explain a fine point of theology, or to discourse on morality, etiquette, behaviour, or the customary practices of Sufis. In the pages of this volume, one encounters a side of Islam that is little known and less understood. For all seekers of the truth, and especially those keen to further their understanding of the teachings of the Prophet, upon him be peace on tasawwuf-related subjects, Maulana Thanawi's work is truly invaluable.

A Collection of Sufi Rules of Conduct

"Abū ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī (d. 412 AH / 1021 CE) was one of the foremost representatives of early Sufism who influenced successive generations through his many disciples and through his writings. 'Jawāmiʻ Ādāb al-Ṣūfiyya', of which 'A Collection of Sufi Rules of Conduct' is the first English translation, was one of the first attempts to provide an accurate formulation of Sufi beliefs and manners (ādāb) and to show their compatibility with the Qurʼān and the example of the Prophet. The many sayings and maxims collected by Sulamī represent the views of more than five generations of mystics and give us insight into Sufi thought up till the beginning of the eleventh century. 'A Collection of Sufi Rules of Conduct' is both a Sufi treatise and a miscellany of universal ethics. By plunging the reader into the heart of the Islamic spiritual tradition and engaging him with its beautiful aphorisms and moral sayings, it propounds the idea that the Sufi, and by extension every human being, should constantly strive towards attaining total harmony between his exterior conduct and his intimate relationship with God. The translation of 'A Collection of Sufi Rules of Conduct' is preceded by an introduction which places Sulamī in his historical, literary and religious context, and which situates the text within the traditions of Arabic literature and Islamic mysticism. The translation is fully annotated and is followed by a glosssary of Sufi technical terms"--Publisher's description, back cover.

Gaining Competitive Advantage Through Hrm Practices in Service Sector

An organization s human resource management (HRM) function focuses on the people aspect of management. It consists of practices that help the organization deal effectively with its employees during the various phases of the employment cycle. Organization s success depends on how an organization manages its resources. Human resource is becoming more important because many other sources of competitive successes are less powerful than they once were. As the basis of competitive advantage has changed it is essential now to develop a different frame of reference for considering issues of management and strategy.
