Awalnya buku ini berupa makalah kecil yang disampaikan penulis dalam berbagai kesempatan pelatihan dasar mengenai teknik penulisan ilmiah bagi para peneliti di pertengahan 1990-an. saat itu tidak banyak literatur yang membahas masalah ini, situasi yang masih bertahan sampai sekarang.
