We empirically investigate the relevance of demand-side complementarity between electronic and traditional provision of banking services. Since no systematic data on prices for the two types of service is available, it is not possible to estimate cross-elasticities of demand. We resort to two indirect tests. The first test is based on estimating the relationship between branches and the diffusion of e-banking services in local markets, controlling for individual bank and market characteristics. We test three alternative hypotheses on the relationship between the two delivery channels: complementarity, substitution or segmentation. We find that banks expanded relatively more in the e-business in those local markets where they had relatively fewer branches, with the exclusion of markets where the banks were chartered. The second test is based on measuring the impact of the joint provision of banking services - electronically and at traditional branches - on banks' revenues per customer. We estimate a non-standard revenue function that relates revenues from asset management, brokerage and payment services to the share of customers employing e-banking, given the total number of bank customers. Our results show that a high share of e-customers is associated with a reduction in revenues per customer. This evidence is not consistent with complementarity because banks did not extract substantial consumer surplus from the joint provision of electronic services and traditional services at the branch.

Kajian ini akan menganalisis sejarah perkembangan nasionalisme Melayu dalam menentang kuasa-kuasa Barat, khususnya British di Tanah Melayu sebelum mencapai kemerdekaan pada tahun 1957. Kaedah kajian yang digunakan adalah berdasarkan kaedah penelitian terhadap sumber-sumber yang diperolehi di perpustakaan dan Arkib Negara Malaysia. Kajian ini akan dimulakan dengan merungkai terlebih dahulu sejarah awal perkembangan ekonomi Tanah Melayu. Kedatangan kuasa-kuasa Barat, iaitu Portugis, Belanda dan British ke Tanah Melayu adalah disebabkan oleh kepentingan ekonomi Tanah Melayu yang juga dikenali sebagai Bumi Emas dan Semenanjung Emas oleh bangsa asing. Tanah Melayu telah dijajah selama lebih 400 tahun sejak penjajahan Portugis pada 1511. Apabila British menguasai Tanah Melayu, kemasukan pemikiran pro-Barat mereka telah mewujudkan konflik dengan masyarakat Melayu. Kajian ini akan memfokus kepada pensejarahan masyarakat Melayu bagi melihat sejarah perkembangan nasionalisme Melayu dan pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam penentangan terhadap British. Selepas negara berjaya mencapai kemerdekaan, perlaksanaan Dasar Pandang Ke Timur oleh Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad pada tahun 1982 dilihat menamatkan konflik berterusan antara pemikiran Pro-Barat yang dibawa penjajah dan semangat nasionalisme Melayu, dengan model Jepun yang mewakili model Timur telah menggantikan model Barat yang sekian lama mendominasi kehidupan masyarakat Melayu seawal penguasaan Portugis di Melaka pada tahun 1511.

Digitalization is reshaping economic activity, shrinking the role of cash, and spurring new digital forms of money. Central banks have been pondering wheter and how to adapt. One possibility is central bank digital currency (CBDC)-- a widely accessible digital form of fiat money that could be legal tender. This discussion note proposes a conceptual framework to assess the case for CBDC adoption from the perspective of users and central banks. It discusses possible CBDC designs, and explores potential benefits and costs, with a focus on the impact on monetary policy, financial stability, and integrity. This note also surveys research and pilot studies on CBDC by central banks around the world.
