Essential Worship

A Handbook for Leaders

An Essential Guide to Understanding and Leading Worship Worship leaders are adrift in a sea of worship resources, but, incredibly, no single book provides a simple introduction to worship and worship leading. Essential Worship is a concise, easy-to-read primer on the basics of worship theology and practice. Each concept is introduced clearly and concisely. Diagrams, charts, and bulleted lists make the information easy to digest. And preparation and reflection questions help readers apply the material to their own church context. Whether one is a beginner or an experienced worship leader, readers from all traditions will find in this resource a solid foundation for future success. It is particularly well-suited for the first-time worship or praise band leader, as well as for pastors who want to be more intentional about the music in their services.

This book is a good springboard for conversation and growth for both worship leaders and congregations."--Sandra McCracken, singer-songwriter "This is the book we've been waiting for!

The Anthropology of Islamic Law

Education, Ethics, and Legal Interpretation at Egypt's Al-Azhar

The Anthropology of Islamic Law shows how hermeneutic theory and practice theory can be brought together to analyze cultural, legal, and religious traditions. These ideas are developed through an analysis of the Islamic legal tradition, which examines both Islamic legal doctrine and religious education. The book combines anthropology and Islamist history, using ethnography and in-depth analysis of Arabic religious texts. The book focuses on higher religious learning in contemporary Egypt, examining its intellectual, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions. Data is drawn from fieldwork inside al-Azhar University, Cairo University's Dar al-Ulum, and the network of traditional study circles associated with the al-Azhar mosque. Together these sites constitute the most important venue for the transmission of religious learning in the contemporary Muslim world. The book gives special attention to contemporary Egypt, and also provides a broader analysis relevant to Islamic legal doctrine and religious education throughout history.

The Governance of Legal Pluralism

Empirical Studies from Africa and Beyond

The Governance of Legal Pluralism challenges both the marginalization of legal arrangements and discourses in social anthropology, as well as the marginalization of legal anthropology within social anthropology. It aims at combining the related fields of political and legal anthropology in order to contribute towards a meaningful (re)integration of the anthropology of law into the mainstream of social anthropology.

Multicultural Education as Social Activism

Connecting multicultural education with political issues of power and struggle, this book explores what multicultural education means to white people, given the unequal racial power relations in the U.S. and worldwide. It examines connections between race, gender, and social class, particularly as these connections play out for white women. While taking a feminist perspective, the author is also wary of the power white middle class women exercise in defining what counts as gender issues. Throughout the book, Sleeter argues that multicultural education was born in political struggle and can never meaningfully be disconnected from politics. Ultimately the quest for schooling for social justice is a political quest rather than a technical issue.

Critical Approaches to International Criminal Law

An Introduction

"This collection of essays is the first dedicated to the topic of critical approaches to international criminal law. This field has recently experienced a significant surge in scholarship, in institutions, and in public debate. Individual criminal accountability is firmly entrenched in both international law and the international consciousness as a necessary mechanism of responsibility. Yet international criminal law as a field has is largely unchecked and unquestioned. The speed at which international tribunals, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, or the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and of course the permanent International Criminal Court, were established has left little time to ponder the assumptions which inform international criminal justice as it is currently understood. A more considered interrogation this field is, then, overdue. And, including papers from an international range of experts in this area, this book critically examines the central tenets of international criminal law: its limitations, as well as its complicities"--
