Applied Public Relations

Cases in Stakeholder Management

Applied Public Relations provides readers with the opportunity to observe and analyze how contemporary businesses and organizations interact with key groups and influences. Through the presentation of cases covering a wide variety of industries, locations, and settings, authors Kathy Brittain McKee and Larry F. Lamb examine how real organizations develop and maintain their relationships, offering valuable insights into contemporary business and organizational management practices. McKee and Lamb place special emphasis on public relations as a strategic management function that must coordinate its planning and activities with key organizational units - human resources, marketing, legal counsel, finance, and operations, among others. A commitment to the ethical practice of public relations underlies the book, and students are challenged not only to assess the effectiveness of the practices outlined, but also to understand the ethical implications of those choices. The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law

Nonie Darwish lived for thirty years in a majority Muslim nation. Everything about her life?family, sexuality, hygiene, business, banking, contracts, economics, politics, social issues, everything?was dictated by the Islamic law code known as Sharia. But Sharia isn't staying in majority Muslim nations. Darwish now lives in the West and brings a warning; the goal of radical Islam is to bring Sharia law to your country. If that happens, the fabric of Western law and liberty will be ripped in two. Under Sharia law: A woman can be beaten for talking to men who are not her relatives and flogged for not wearing a headdress Daughters, sisters, and wives can be legally killed by the men in their family Non-Muslims can be beheaded, and their Muslim killers will not receive the death penalty Certain kinds of child molestation are allowed The husband of a "rebellious" wife can deny her medical care or place her under house arrest Think it can't happen? In 2008, England?once the seat of Western liberty and now the home of many Muslim immigrants?declared that Sharia courts in Britain have the force of law. When Muslim populations reach as little as 1 or 2 percent, says Darwish, they begin making demands of the larger community, such as foot-level faucets for washing before praying in public schools, businesses, and airports. "Airports in Kansas City, Phoenix, and Indianapolis are among those who have already installed foot baths for Muslim cab drivers," writes Darwish. These demands test how far Westerners will go in accommodating the Muslim minority. How far will they push? The Organization of the Islamic Conference works to Islamize international human rights laws and apply Sharia "standards" for blasphemy to all nations. The penalty for blasphemy? Death. Weaving personal experience together with extensive documentation and research, Darwish exposes the facts and reveals the global threat posed by Sharia law. Anyone concerned about Western rights and liberties ignores her warning and analysis at their peril.

Policy Analysis of Structural Reforms in Higher Education

Processes and Outcomes

This book addresses the complex phenomenon in higher education of structural reforms in higher education systems. Across the globe, governments initiate comprehensive reforms of their higher education systems because they want their models to be the best and to excel at what they do. This regularly requires governments to change the higher education landscape to achieve their set objectives. Changes can include merger processes, the introduction of a new sector of higher education or a new type of higher education institution or excellence initiative. This book explores the current understanding of how successful such comprehensive reforms have been through an examination of eleven reform cases in European countries. For each reform, the different phases of the policy process – policy objectives, design, implementation, policy tools and evaluation – are systematically described and analysed to provide an overview of the factors that contribute to the success or failure of the reforms.

Therefore, in this book, we will take the policy stage model as our point of departure to structure the analysis of structural reforms. Public policies are complex, comprehensive and dynamic; hence, there is need for ordering and ...

Application of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law to the Armed Conflicts of the Sudan

Complementary Or Mutually Exclusive Regimes?

The death toll resulting from all the armed conflicts in the Sudan, including south Sudan and Darfur, has far exceeded that of the victims of many recent conflicts combined together; more than those of Rwanda, Former Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone and East Timor. Despite the tragic death toll, massive displacement, alleged genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the Sudanese case has neither featured in the legal literature nor been mentioned in the practice of international Tribunals. This book aims to rectify this by focusing on the Sudans armed conflicts as a case study. Unlike the approach followed in the preponderant legal literature, which tends to focus on International Humanitarian Law as the only applicable regime in armed conflicts, this book brings on board Human Rights Law, which can be applied side by side with International Humanitarian Law. In this sense, it tries to build bridges between the two branches of international law. It focuses on the operation of both regimes at three levels: their scope of application, the protection they afford, and how they can be enforced or implemented. It critically highlights the Sudans laws and how they cohere with or contradict International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law. It particularly examines the Sudans military, criminal and Islamic laws and judicial practices and analyzes them in the light of International treaties ratified by the Sudan. It draws heavily on the practice of regional and UN human rights bodies and humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC. The legal materials included in the book constitute a good resource for future work in the field. Most of the materials were written in Arabic, and hence are unavailable in other jurisdictions. Thus, including them as translated materials will prove to be of great value for those who intend to familiarize themselves with the Sudans laws and practices in this field. With a preface by Jan Pronk, Former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN to Sudan.
