Developing Competent Teachers

Approaches to Professional Competence in Teacher Education

The aim of this book is to explore the implications of different ways of thinking about the professional competences of teachers. It does so through case studies of competence frameworks used in a number of teacher education contexts - and, for comparative insights, in social work, nursing and police training. The book arose out of the work of a national working group under the auspices of the ESRC. The intended readership is all involved in teacher education: in particular, Higher Education tutors; mentors and senior staff in schools supporting school-based ITE schemes; INSET providers and LEA advisory staff working in the area of NQT recruitment and staff development.
