Regional Blocs

Building Blocks or Stumbling Blocks?

A topical study of regional arrangements covering ASEAN, SAARC and APEC in Asia, NAFTA and MERCOSUR in the Americas, SADC, SACU and ECOWAS in Africa, and the European Union, EFTA and Eastern Europe. The book argues that foreign direct investment is complementary to trade and most regional arrangements can create trade and induce growth so long as they remain open and non-discriminatory. But they could also become stumbling blocks to globalization. The book demonstrates how US and EU trade policy will be crucial in shaping the world economy.

Teacher Quality in Upper Secondary Science Education

International Perspectives

Upper secondary science is the bridge to science-related careers and thereby to human capital formation in science and technology. Quality rather than quantity is what counts at this level and teacher quality is a major determinant. This book looks at upper secondary science teacher quality in eighteen countries from affluent Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development members to very poor countries. The yardsticks applied to teacher quality are academic and professional education and training, professional practice including the resource base, continuing professional development, and science teacher associations. All country case studies are written to facilitate internal cross-referencing, thereby accentuating the comparative nature of the volume. The book ends with an 'investment guide' that focuses on where and how money is best spent in relation to building up and maintaining a quality upper secondary science teaching force.

Second Language Teacher Professional Development

Technological Innovations for Post-Emergency Teacher Education

This edited book brings together documented evidence and theoretical propositions on the essential mediating role of digital technology in L2 teacher education and professional development. Topics range from technological affordances in teacher education, to challenges and responses to emergency transition from face to face to virtual professional development, to successful practices of online teacher training courses. Bringing together examples from various countries and contexts of how L2 teacher trainers and trainee teachers view these forced changes and react to them, the volume fills a gap in the use of digital technology in contexts where teacher educators and trainee teachers are not technology-literate and not prepared for technology-oriented education. In addition to a Foreword by Mark Warschauer and Introduction and Conclusion chapters by Editors, the volume features 13 full-length chapters by some of the well-known experts from countries such as Australia, Finland, Mexico, the UK, the USA, Spain, Singapore, Turkey and Sweden.

Hadith as Scripture

Discussions on the Authority of Prophetic Traditions in Islam

This work explores the earliest extant discussions on the authority of the Hadith in Islam and compares them with contemporary debates. These lively and often polemical debates are mostly popular discussions in which Muslims from different backgrounds and cultures participate - making this topic relevant to Muslims in their daily lives, as well as a question of academic interest. What makes this book unique is that it is the first study to take into account both the earliest and most recent discussions of the oral tradition of the prophet Muhammad. The book also includes the first Western language translation of al-Shafi'i's Kitab Jima' al-'Ilm, which articulates arguments that were critical in establishing the position of the Hadith in mainstream Islam.

Ideal Islamic Economy

An Introduction

This book provides an introduction to the vision of an economic system based completely on the Holy Qur’an—a system defined as a collection of institutions, representing rules of behavior, prescribed by Allah for humans, and the traditions of the Messenger. The authors argue that the main reason for the economic underperformance of Muslim countries and their economies has been non-compliance with the prescribed rules of behavior. Rule non-compliance has been chiefly due to the failure of Muslims to comprehend the Metaframework of the Qur’an and the Archetype Model of the Prophet Mohammad and interpret them in ways compatible with their own generation and time. Askari and Mirakhor believe these rules (institutions), properly adapted to prevailing conditions present what they consider as an ideal economic system.

The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy

The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy introduces Arabic medieval astrological and magical theories formulated mainly in The Great Introduction to the Judgements of the Stars by Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi (787-886), De radiis by Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi (801-873), and the Picatrix by Maslama al-Qurtubi (d. 964). Liana Saif investigates their influence on early modern occult philosophy, particularly the works of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), and John Dee (1527-c. 1608). The Arabic theories of astral influences provided a naturalistic explanation of astral influences and magical efficacy based on Aristotelian notions of causality. In addition, this book explores how this causality was reconciled with astrological hermeneutics, Neoplatonic emanationism, and Platonic eschatology, thus demonstrating the complexity of early modern occult philosophy and its syncretism.
