Qur'anic Studies Today

Qur'ānic Studies Today brings together specialists in the field of Islamic studies to provide a range of essays that reflect the depth and breadth of scholarship on the Qur'ān. Combining theoretical and methodological clarity with close readings of qur'ānic texts, these contributions provide close analysis of specific passages, themes, and issues within the Qurʾān, even as they attend to the disciplinary challenges within the field of qur'ānic studies today. Chapters are arranged into three parts, treating specific figures appearing in the Qurʾān, analysing particular suras, and finally reflecting on the Qur'ān and its "others." They explore the internal dimensions and interior chronology of the Qur'ān as text, its possible conversations with biblical and non-biblical traditions in Late Antiquity, and its role as scripture in modern exegesis and recitation. Together, they are indispensable for students and scholars who seek an understanding of the Qur'ān founded on the most recent scholarly achievements. Offering both a reflection of and a reflection on the discipline of qur'ānic studies, the strong, scholarly examinations of the Qur'ān in this volume provide a valuable contribution to Islamic and qur'ānic studies.

Collective Behavior and Social Movements

Why have scholars of social movements neglected sources of continuity between
cycles of movement activity and, instead, preferred an "immaculate conception"
interpretation of social movements? First, scholars generally are more interested

Group Politics and Social Movements in Canada, Second Edition

Group Politics and Social Movements in Canada, Second Edition updates and expands its exploration of a wide range of organized group and social movement activity in Canadian politics. Particularly distinctive is the inclusion of Quebec nationalism and Aboriginal politics. Many other areas of collective activity are also included: the Occupy movement and anti-poverty organizing, ethnocultural political mobilization, disability, lesbian and gay politics, feminism, farmers and organized interests in agriculture, Christian evangelical groups, environment, and health movements. Contributors to the collection employ a number of theoretical perspectives from political science and sociology to describe the evolution of organized groups and movements and to evaluate successes in exercising influence on Canadian politics. Each chapter provides an overview of the group or movement along with an account of its main networks and organizations, strategies, goals, successes, and failures.

Social Movements in Politics

A Comparative Study

In this book, Zirakzadeh examines different types of social movements, from the Greens in Germany to the Shining Path in Peru. The book concludes with a juxtaposition of the three major theoretical approaches and historical findings and proposes a fourth theoretical approach emphasizing factional conflict and reconciliation.

Other scholars who define social movements in terms of a group's deliberate
attempt to remake society include Goldberg (1991), Killian (1964), and Morris (
1984). Piven (1976: 300–1), however, contends that the concept of social

Social Movements

Identity, Culture, and the State

"Why do social movements take the forms they do? How do activists' efforts and beliefs interact with the cultural and political contexts in which they work? Why do activists take particular strategic paths, and how do their strategies affect the course and impact of the movement? Representing a new generation of social movement theory, the contributors to this volume build bridges between political opportunities and collective identity paradigms, between analyses of movements' internal dynamics and their external contexts, between approaches that emphasize structure and those that emphasize culture. Case studies range from civil rights and religious movements in North American and Western Europe to revolutionary movements in Burma, the Philippines, and Indonesia; labor campaigns in England and South Africa; and feminist movements in India. Combining a variety of perspectives on a wide range of topics, the contributors' synthetic approach shifts the field of social movements forward in important new directions."--Back cover.

The Social Movement Society

Contentious Politics for a New Century

Is there more social protest now than there was prior to the movement politics of the 1960s, and if so, does it result in a distinctly less civil society throughout the world? If everybody protests, what does protest mean in advanced industrial societies? This volume brings together scholars from Europe and the U.S., and from both political science and sociology, to consider the ways in which the social movement has changed as a political form and the ways in which it continues to change the societies in which it is prevalent.

social movement in Latin America. In a climate of greater political openness

Muhammadiyah Gerakan Pembaruan

Muhammadiyah sejatinya gerakan pembaruan. Gerakan Tajdid fil-Islam.
