The Public Bank Solution

From Austerity to Prosperity

WHAT WALL STREET DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. Shock waves from one Wall Street scandal after another have completely disillusioned us with our banking system; yet we cannot do without banks. Nearly all money today is simply bank credit. Economies run on it, and it is created when banks make loans. The main flaw in the current model is that private profiteers have acquired control of the credit spigots. They can cut off the flow, direct it to their cronies, and manipulate it for personal gain at the expense of the producing economy. The benefits of bank credit can be maintained while eliminating these flaws, through a system of banks operated as public utilities, serving the public interest and returning their profits to the public. This book looks at the public bank alternative, and shows with examples from around the world and through history that it works admirably well, providing the key to sustained high performance for the economy and well-being for the people.

Strategies for Western Banks to Survive in Islamic Finance Environment

Research Paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , language: English, abstract: The current rapid growth rate of Islamic banking in the world market has made the banking approach a significant contributor to economic growth. However, few studies have been done to determine the extent to which conventional banks can survive in an Islamic banking environment. The purpose of this study was to assess the financial performance of financial institutions and relate it to their involvement in Islamic banking. The study took an explorative and a quantitative approach, whereby literature was acquired from online sources for use in assessing the current state of knowledge, and financial performance data for Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were acquired from Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The literature was reviewed in the literature review section while financial performance records were assessed using Microsoft Excel 2011 software package. The study findings determined that conventional banks have varying degrees of success in their Islamic banking ventures, whereby high levels of fluctuations characterize the institutions’ financial records. According to the exponential growth of Goldman Sachs in 2012 upon the issuance of sukuks, it is relatively easy for conventional banks to achieve growth through offering of Islamic banking products. However, according to the study findings, Islamic banking is not suitable for banks that want to achieve consistency in exponential growth, but is highly relevant for institutions that want to remain stable in their financial performance despite changes in market conditions.

ESSAYS IN LEGAL ETHICS

George William Warvelle, 1852-1940, was a legal paragon in his time; a Professor of Law in Chicago; a prominent legal scholar; and the author of many law volumes still in print and found in law offices and libraries today. This book was first published in 1902 in an era of no radio, no TV, or other electronic wastelands; an era when man communicated with conversation, reading and writing. The book is by a lawyer and was aimed at the then law students and practicing lawyers; however, the lessons therein are of historical interest to any lawyer or scholarly person today.

Understanding Education Policy

The ‘Four Education Orientations’ Framework

Analysis of education policy often follows a particular orientation, such as conservative or neo-liberal. Yet, readers are often left to wonder the true meaning and conceptual framing behind these orientations. Without this knowledge, the policy analysis lacks true rigor, its value is diminished as the results may prove difficult to reproduce. Understanding Education Policy provides an overarching framework of four key orientations that lie beneath much policy analysis, yet are rarely used with accuracy: conservative, liberal, critical and post-modern. It details each orientation's application to policy making, implementation and overall impact. The book also argues the value of analysing a policy’s orientation to improve the clarity of its analysis and allow broader trends across the education policy field to emerge. The book offers practical examples, key vocabulary and reflection activities which give equitable, yet critical consideration to all education orientations. This allows readers to see the benefits and disadvantages of each perspective and discover their own biases. This introduction to education policy analysis offers theoretically broad, highly practical coverage. It is adaptable to many kinds of policy analysis areas and will appeal to a wide range of readers with an interest in education policy, from students conducting specific research to policy makers looking for a deeper way to re-think their work.
