Hasil Uji Kompetensi Guru (UKG) masih kurang memuaskan, sehingga suka atau tidak suka memerlukan upaya untuk meningkatkannya. Persoalan ini kian kompleks dan berat, karena upaya yang dihadapi bukan hanya sekedar meningkatkan kompetensi guru, tetapi juga dihadapkan kepada tantangan globalisasi di abad 21 yang ditandai dengan iklim kompetitif antarbangsa yang semakin ketat. Guru dituntut untuk mampu membentuk keluaran peserta didik yang menguasai dan mengembangkan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi, literasi (membaca - menulis - berhitung - ICT - dan sebagainya), serta kreatif, berpikir kritis, komunikasi, dan kolaborasi. Selaras dengan perkembangan, perubahan, dan tuntutan yang ada, guru haruslah kompeten dan profesional, serta memiliki energi, motivasi dan dorongan untuk melakukan pengembangan keprofesian berkelanjutan (PKB). Dari sisi eksternal, berbagai pihak di luar diri guru perlu menstimulant kemunculan PKB tersebut. Pihak Ditjen GTK sendiri telah menerapkan program Guru Pembelajar sejak tahun 2016 lalu melalui wadah KKG/MGMP untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru. Menurut hemat kami, program Guru Pembelajar harus dianggap sebagai pemancing dan pemicu kemunculan PKB Guru. Di samping itu, upaya menstimulant dan mendorong PKB Guru perlu dijalankan dengan menciptakan kondusivitas lingkungan sekolah, yaitu: kemampuan sekolah dalam mengembangkan institusi pendidikannya ke arah organisasi pembelajar (learning organization). Dalam konteks ini pula, gagasan/ide mengenai Sekolah Lima Hari (SLH) perlu dipertimbangkan sebagai upaya mendorong PKB Guru. Segenap hal yang dikemukakan inilah merupakan sorotan dari isi buku.
