The Roots and Future of Management Theory

A Systems Perspective

Interesting and easy-to-read, The Roots and Future of Management Theory: A Systems Approach provides a comprehensive overview of today's workplace -past, present ,and future. The author brings the key characters in the evolution of management theory to life. Not only will your students understand the roots of our current situation, how workplace change happens, and what forces are involved - they will see how it fits into changes in society as a whole. There have obviously been many changes in the workplace from the Medieval Period to the present, and there will certainly be even more changes in the future. This book explores these changes and connects them to changes in: general philosophy (rationalism, empiricism, pragmatism); religious philosophy (Catholicism, Protestantism); social philosophy (Machiavellian Humanism, Christian Humanism); economic philosophy (laissez faire, Communism); and workplace philosophy (technology as a friend, technology as an enemy). Battles have raged through the ages between these opposing forces, affecting management systems, the quality of working life, and life in general. The author discusses how this has lead to today's quest for a synthesis of the strengths of these forces, and suggests that it has been found in the systems approach. He describes what this synthesis - combined with the powers of the computer - could and should lead to in the future. Written at a level that both graduate and undergraduate student will understand, The Roots and Future of Management Theory provides an overview of management theory. Comprehensive but not overwhelming, this textbook will give your students an understanding the changes in the workplace since the beginning of the industrial age, and offer them some insights into the changes most likely to occur in the 21st century.

Systems Approaches to Knowledge Management, Transfer, and Resource Development

The world is moving into a new era of the knowledge economy. In the past decade, the significance of developing knowledge has grown to a level where it is now dominating other socio-economic factors. Systems Approaches to Knowledge Management, Transfer, and Resource Development provides a new view of knowledge management through the lens of systems approach, which looks at each part of the knowledge management system as a section of the full overview. This cutting-edge resource will be essential for academicians, scientists, practitioners, and industry professionals as all of these individuals work toward a new understanding of knowledge and information management practices in the 21st century.

Systems Approach to Management of Disasters

Methods and Applications

The main goal of this text is to introduce the systems approach to disasters management community as an alternative approach that can provide support for interdisciplinary activities involved in the management of disasters. The systems approach draws on the fields of operations research and economics to create skills in solving complex management problems. The text is organized into four parts. Part I provides an introductory discussion of disaster management including an overview of the main terms used. Part II is devoted to the introduction of systems theory, mathematical formalization and classification of methods. The material presented in this section should be of practical relevance during the process of selecting an appropriate tool for the solution of a problem. Part III is technical in nature, providing a simulation approach and a detailed description of system dynamics simulation. This section details two areas of application: flood evacuation simulation, and disaster risk assessment. Part IV ends with a chapter covering steps to improve disaster management. Finally parts of the book can be used as a tool for specialized short courses for practitioners. For example a course on 'System analysis for emergency management optimization' could be based on Chapters 3, 4 and parts of Chapter 6. Included in the book is a CD with three computer programs Vensim PLE, LINPRO, and COMPRO. Vensim PLE (Personal Learning Edition) is state-of-the-art simulation software used for the implementation of system dynamics simulation. The other two programs are: LINPRO, a linear programming optimization tool; and COMPRO, for the implementation of the multi-objective analysis tool of compromise programming.

Handbook of Electronic Waste Management

International Best Practices and Case Studies

Handbook of Electronic Waste Management: International Best Practices and Case Studies begin with a brief summary of the environmental challenges associated with the approaches used in international e-waste handling. The book's authors offer a detailed presentation of e-waste handling methods that also includes examples to further demonstrate how they work in the real world. This is followed by data that reveals the geographies of e-waste flows at global, national and subnational levels. Users will find this resource to be a detailed presentation of e-waste estimation methods that also addresses both the handling of e-waste and their hazardous effect on the surrounding environment. Includes case studies to illustrate the implementation of innovative e-waste treatment technologies Provides methods for designing and managing e-waste management networks in accordance with regulations, fulfilment obligations and process efficiency Reference guide for adapting traditional waste management methods and handling practices to the handling and storage of electronic waste until disposal Provides e-waste handling solutions for both urban and rural perspectives

Chaos and Complexity Theory for Management: Nonlinear Dynamics

Nonlinear Dynamics

Although chaos theory refers to the existence between seemingly random events, it has been gaining the attention of science, technology and managements fields. The shift from traditional procedures to the dynamics of chaos and complexity theory has resulted in a new element of complexity thinking, allowing for a greater capability for analyzing and understanding key business processes. Chaos and Complexity Theory for Management: Nonlinear Dynamics explores chaos and complexity theory and its relationship with the understanding of natural chaos in the business environment. Utilizing these theories aids in comprehending the development of businesses as a complex adaptive system.

As for system approaches... however they are defined, system approaches are a scientific revolution. ... For this reason, Heylighen (1999) treated cybernetics and system theories as a single approach with two branches.

This book is the result of extensive studies by the authors in the fields of research in. and analysis and design of. the system of management of production organizations under a socialist econ omy. The management of the national economy in the USSR is developed on a planned basis. This work is part of the general state-sponsored strategy of economic development which is dis cussed and laid down by the Congresses of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) and is then translated into concrete decisions of the government and other bodies of economic and regional management. The general policies on management improvement are closely scrutinized by these bodies. the leaders of the Party and the State. and the Soviet press. In the recent years this work has acquired special importance.
