A Language Development Course

English for the Teacher is a course which enables teachers to improve their language ability for a number of purposes - using English in the classroom, making professional contacts, reading about the teaching of English and discussions with colleagues and students. As well as providing language practice for the four skills, it also invites teachers to comment on the learning value of what they are doing and thus discuss and reflect on different ways of teaching and learning. Professional Development of Teacher Educators in Further Education

Pathways, Knowledge, Identities, and Vocationalism

Professional Development of Teacher Educators in Further Education critically analyses the specific challenges relating to teacher educators in the English further education (FE), such as the diverse nature of learners and the variety of educational contexts. It focuses on the journeys to becoming teacher educators, their relevant teaching know-how and professional needs. This book combines theoretical frameworks with both qualitative and quantitative data to outline the pathways, professional identities, knowledge, and continuous professional development of teacher educators. This data is used to discuss the four main themes. The first deals with the teacher educators’ initial disciplinary areas, journey-making to be educators, and the current titles/positions. The next one delineates the know-how (knowledge, experiences, capacities and skill sets) to perform as teacher educators. The third one relates to their professional identities and the final topic, their professional requirements as FE teacher educators. Contributing to the field of further and vocational education, this book will be of great interest for researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in the field of education, specifically FE and teacher educators.

Profiling the Islamic Civilization

A History of the Legislative, Judicial, & Executive Branches

While Teaching a course on Human Rights Laws and Islam, some of my students approached me asking for some short read on Islamic law and Islamic civilization. Considering the topic of the course, it was hard finding a book that is small yet relevant to the issues discussed in class. Then I found this manuscript sitting on the shelf for years. I offered it to couple students who read it and recommended that I make available in some form, as they have learned from it quite a lot in spite of the highly technical orientation of the materials contained therein. I spent few days reviewing it only to discover that Professor Khallaf did indeed offer quite an original analysis and perspective on a number of issues that are relevant today. I then decided to put this document in the public domain, hoping that students and scholars alike find it of use.

Why Church Matters

Worship, Ministry, and Mission in Practice

Written by the Christianity Today 2007 Book Award Winner, this book discusses how worship is work, witness, and warfare; how it grounds us in the good and the true and the beautiful; and how it teaches and shapes us in the language of faith. It provides a vision for the church by looking at 3 practices: baptism, communion, and foot-washing.

In Why Church Matters, a Christianity Today 2007 Book Award Winner, Jonathan Wilson offers compelling insight into this question by examining how Christian practices are centered on gathered worship.

Daoist Rituals, State Religion, and Popular Practices

Zhenwu Worship from Song to Ming (960-1644)

Zhenwu, or the Perfected Warrior, is one of the few Chinese Deities that can rightfully claim a countrywide devotion. Religious specialists, lay devotees, the state machine, and the cultural industry all participated, both collaboratively and competitively, in the evolution of this devotional movement. This book centres on the development and transformation of the godhead of Zhenwu, as well as the devotional movement focused on him. Organised chronologically on the development of the Zhenwu worship in Daoist rituals, state religion, and popular practices, it looks at the changes in the way Zhenwu was perceived, and the historical context in which those changes took place. The author investigates the complicated means by which various social and political groups contested with each other in appropriating cultural-religious symbols. The question at the core of the book is how, in a given historical context, human agents and social institutions shape the religious world to which they profess devotion. The work offers a holistic approach to religion in a period of Chinese history when central, local, official, clerical and popular power are constantly negotiating and reshaping established values.

This book focuses on one of the few Chinese deities that can rightfully claim a countrywide devotion, Zhenwu or the Perfected Warrior.
