This edited volume explores theoretical and empirical issues related to monetary economics and policy in the Islamic financial system. Derived from the Conference on Islamic Monetary Economics and Institutions: Theory and Practice 2017 held in Malé, Maldives, the enclosed papers highlights several option for authorities and regulatory bodies regarding monetary policy and regulation, as well as discussing how Islamic monetary policy effects growth, financial stability and resilience to shocks in practice. The inter-linkage between Islamic monetary policy and other markets are also explored. The subject of Islamic economics has gained considerable attention in the last four decades with the emergence of Islamic financial institutions around the world. This phenomenon has motivated economists to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework of modern monetary economics for Islamic economic system. An important characteristic of the Islamic economic system is the abolition of interest from the financial system. Islamic monetary economics is distinguished from conventional monetary economics due to the absence of interest. Therefore, under the Islamic economic system, monetary policy has to depend on other tools. In the early theoretical literature on Islamic monetary economics, many have discussed the role of money in Islamic economics system, while the number of empirical studies on Islamic monetary economics is a relatively new phenomenon. According to Islamic scholars, there are three main goals of Islamic monetary policy: a) economic well-being with full employment and optimum rate of economic growth; b) socioeconomic justice and equitable distribution of income and wealth and c) stability in the value of money. Hence, the Islamic monetary policy has several socioeconomic and ethical implications. Featuring regional case studies, this book serves as a valuable resource for academics, scholars, practitioners and policy makers in the areas of Islamic economics and finance.

Islamic Financial Economy and Islamic Banking, is a thorough, deeply conceptual, analytical and applied work in the area of epistemological foundation of Islamic world-system. The book presents a new frontier of original contribution to the theme of generalized-system model of shari’ah. The model, derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah (Prophetic guidance) incorporates a wide analytical coverage of the purpose and objective of the Islamic worldview (maqasid as-shari’ah) in Islamic economics and finance in particular. The author covers issues that contrast with the existing understanding of Islamic economics and finance, including some specific goals defining the field and how they compare in today’s unstable world of financial volatility. A new heterodox thinking in economic theory is outlined. The potential as to how such issues can be addressed by the Tawhidi epistemology in formulating the generalized-system model of the purpose and objective of shari’ah lead the way in this book. This compendium of four mini-projects carried out by a special task force of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) addresses policy and management issues related to providing accessibility to handicapped students in higher education. Topics range from executive policy decisions on compliance with federal accessibility mandates to operational procedures for responding to specific accommodation requests. The compendium is comprised of four sections: Section 1 was developed from a series of site-visit interviews with senior-level decision makers, faculty, staff and handicapped students at six colleges and universities. It contains an overview of accessibility issues and problems that require attention, a discussion of how accessibility considerations can be incorporated into a planning and budgeting process, and a set of guidelines for assessing specific accommodation requests; Section 2 reviews 16 national data bases that describe the handicapped population in the United States and contains summary charts of the characteristics revealed. Section 3 describes the results of a survey that NACUBO mailed to a stratified sample of 944 of its member institutions concerning trends in accessibility expenditures and number and types of handicapped students served; and Section 4 lists adaptive education equipment by impairment (such as hearing or mobility) and then by function (such as writing or speaking).
