Strategic Human Resource Management

Formulating and Implementing HR Strategies for a Competitive Advantage

The concept of strategic human resource management has developed widely in the last couple of years, especially because of the impact of human resources on the competitiveness of organizations. The development of human resource strategies involves taking into account their multiple mutual dependencies and the fact that they must be vertically integrated with the business strategy. These strategies define the intentions and plans related to the overall organizational considerations, such as organizational competitiveness, effectiveness or image, and to more specific aspects of human resources management, such as resourcing, motivating, valuating, learning and development, reward and employee relations. Strategic management of human resources provides a large perspective on the way critical issues or success factors related to people can be addressed and how different concepts of strategic decisions are made, with long-term impacts on the behavior and success of the organization. The fundamental objective of human resource strategic management is to generate strategic capabilities by ensuring that the organization has the high-qualified, committed and well-motivated employees it needs to achieve and sustain the competitive advantage. The emergence of strategic human resource management (SHRM) is influenced by global competition and the corresponding search for sources of a sustainable competitive advantage. SHRM has achieved its prominence because it provides a means by which business firms can enhance the competitiveness and promote managerial efficiency. It facilitates the development of human capital that meets the requirements of a competitive business strategy, so that organizational goals and the mission of the organization will be achieved. The HRM system is defined as "a set of distinct but interrelated activities, functions and processes that are directed at attracting, developing, and maintaining (or disposing of) a firm’s human resources." Many agree that HRM is the most effective tool which contributes to the creation of human capital, and in turn, contributes to organizational performance and the competitive advantage. This book puts emphasis on understanding the role of HRM between organizations and people and provides an analytical approach toward encompassing HRM, employment relations, and organizational behavior. As a management discipline, HRM draws insights, models and theories from cognate disciplines and applies them to real-world settings. Further, this book discusses how current theoretical perspectives and frameworks (e.g., those related to strategic competitiveness, knowledge management, learning organization, communities of practice, etc.) can be applied by reflective practitioners to create an eco-friendly organizational culture.

Educational Psychology

When this classic book was first published in 1926, L.S. Vygotsky was well on his way to becoming one of the leading intellectuals in Russia. His study of the psychology of education led him to believe that the child should be the main figure in the educational process - and the efforts of the teacher should be directed toward organizing, not dictating, the child's development. "The educational process must be based on the student's individual activity ..." he states in Educational Psychology, "... and the art of education should involve nothing more than guiding and monitoring this activity." At a time when most education consisted of rote memorization and thwacks across the wrist with a ruler, these ideas were considered quite radical. Today's educators can find much that is of use in the pages of Educational Psychology. Vygotsky addresses many issues that are still relevant in the 1990s - abnormal social behavior, the nurturing of creativity and reasoning, problems with attention and memory - in a bold and opinionated fashion that is sure to delight educators as well as lovers of classical Russian writing. Psychologists will also find the book useful for its fascinating glimpses into the study of psychology in the early twentieth century.

Introduction to Logic Design, Second Edition

The second edition of this text provides an introduction to the analysis and design of digital circuits at a logic, instead of electronics, level. It covers a range of topics, from number system theory to asynchronous logic design. A solution manual is available to instructors only. Requests must be made on official school stationery.

SMACing the Bank

How to Use Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud Technologies to Transform the Business Processes of Banks and the Banking Experience

The formula for the Future of Work is called SMAC - social, mobile, analytics and cloud on one integrated stack where each function enables another to maximize its effect. This is the new enterprise IT model delivering an organization that is more connective, collaborative, real time and productive. This book provides a comprehensive view of how SMAC Technologies are impacting the entire banking "eco-system" as well as the key stakeholders, namely customers, employees and partners.

Based on how digital technologies have been rapidly evolving and are being deployed by the financial enterprises, ... In the pre-digital banking era, (real) customers had to visit (real or physical) bank branches for their money ...

A Textbook on ATM Telecommunications

Principles and Implementation

With quantum leaps in science and technology occurring at breakneck speed, professionals in virtually every field face a daunting task-practicing their discipline while keeping abreast of new advances and applications in their filed. In no field is this more applicable than in the rapidly growing field of telecommunications engineering. Practicing engineers who work with ATM technology on a daily basis must not only keep their skill sharp in areas such as ATM network interfaces, protocols, and standards, but they must also stay informed, about new classes of ATM applications. A Textbook on ATM Telecommunications gives active telecommunications engineers the advantage they need to stay sharp in their field. From the very basics of ATM to state-of-the-art applications, it covers the gamut of topics related to this intriguing switching and multiplexing strategy. Starting with an introduction to telecommunications, this text combines the theory underlying broadband communications technology with applied practical instruction and lessons gleaned from industry. The author covers fundamental communications and network theory, followed by applied ATM networking. Each chapter includes design exercises as well as worked examples . A Textbook on ATM Telecommunications includes examples of design and implementation-making it an ideal took for both aspiring and practicing telecommunication professionals. Features

An Introduction to Particle Physics and the Standard Model

An Introduction to the Standard Model of Particle Physics familiarizes readers with what is considered tested and accepted and in so doing, gives them a grounding in particle physics in general. Whenever possible, Dr. Mann takes an historical approach showing how the model is linked to the physics that most of us have learned in less challenging areas. Dr. Mann reviews special relativity and classical mechanics, symmetries, conservation laws, and particle classification; then working from the tested paradigm of the model itself, he: Describes the Standard Model in terms of its electromagnetic, strong, and weak components Explores the experimental tools and methods of particle physics Introduces Feynman diagrams, wave equations, and gauge invariance, building up to the theory of Quantum Electrodynamics Describes the theories of the Strong and Electroweak interactions Uncovers frontier areas and explores what might lie beyond our current concepts of the subatomic world Those who work through the material will develop a solid command of the basics of particle physics. The book does require a knowledge of special relativity, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism, but most importantly it requires a hunger to understand at the most fundamental level: why things exist and how it is that anything happens. This book will prepare students and others for further study, but most importantly it will prepare them to open their minds to the mysteries that lie ahead. Ultimately, the Large Hadron Collider may prove the model correct, helping so many realize their greatest dreams ... or it might poke holes in the model, leaving us to wonder an even more exciting possibility: that the answers lie in possibilities so unique that we have not even dreamt of them.

In my 20 years of teaching this subject I have found that students can indeed rise to the challenge, ... introduce students to Feynman diagrams, wave equations, and gauge invariance, building up to the theory of Quantum Electrodynamics.
