In the case of peanuts, only recent information is available - other than the ten-year Federal Census and that only back to 1889. Peanut yields in pounds per acre date back to 1920 only. Adjustments are made for earlier years. Peanuts are of a speculative nature (cash crop) in the northeastern counties where grown commercially. Farmers estimated that 21 percent of the crop produced was destroyed by climatic conditions, diseases and insects.
