Take My Word

Autobiographical Innovations of Ethnic American Working Women

In an innovative critique of traditional approaches to autobiography, Anne E. Goldman convincingly demonstrates that ethnic women can and do speak for themselves, even in the most unlikely contexts. Citing a wide variety of nontraditional texts—including the cookbooks of Nuevo Mexicanas, African American memoirs of midwifery and healing, and Jewish women's histories of the garment industry—Goldman illustrates how American women have asserted their ethnic identities and made their voices heard over and sometimes against the interests of publishers, editors, and readers. While the dominant culture has interpreted works of ethnic literature as representative of a people rather than an individual, the working women of this study insist upon their own agency in narrating rich and complicated self-portraits.

The Secret Life of Dictionaries

"Brimming with intelligence and personality, a vastly entertaining account of how dictionaries are made - a must read for word mavens. Have you ever tried to define the word "is?" Do you have strong feelings about the word (and, yes, it is a word) "irregardless?" Did you know that OMG was first used in 1917, in a letter to Winston Churchill? These are the questions that keep lexicographers up at night. While most of us might take dictionaries for granted, the process of writing dictionaries is in fact as lively and dynamic as language itself. With sharp wit and irreverence, Kory Stamper cracks open the complex, obsessive world of lexicography, from the agonizing decisions about what and how to define, to the knotty questions of usage in an ever-changing language. She explains why the small words are the most difficult to define, how it can take nine months to define a single word, and how our biases about language and pronunciation can have tremendous social influence. Throughout Stamper brings to life the hallowed halls (and highly idiosyncratic cubicles) of Merriam-Webster, a surprisingly rich world inhabited by quirky and erudite individuals who quietly shape the way we communicate. A sure delight for all lovers of words, Harmless Drudges will also improve readers' grasp and use of the English language"--

Essays on the Song Cycle and on Defining the Field : Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Word and Music Studies at Ann Arbor, MI, 1999

This volume assembles twelve interdisciplinary essays that were originally presented at the Second International Conference on Word and Music Studies at Ann Arbor, MI, in 1999, a conference organized by the International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA). The contributions to this volume focus on two centres of interest. The first deals with general issues of literature and music relations from culturalist, historical, reception-aesthetic and cognitive points of view. It covers issues such as conceptual problems in devising transdisciplinary histories of both arts, cultural functions of opera as a means of reflecting postcolonial national identity, the problem of verbalizing musical experience in nineteenth-century aesthetics and of understanding reception processes triggered by musicalized fiction. The second centre of interest deals with a specific genre of vocal music as an obvious area of word and music interaction, namely the song cycle. As a musico-literary genre, the song cycle not only permits explorations of relations between text and music in individual songs but also raises the question if, and to what extent words and/or music contribute to creating a larger unity beyond the limits of single songs. Elucidating both of these issues with stimulating diversity the essays in this section highlight classic nineteenth- and twentieth-century song cycles by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss and Benjamin Britten and also include the discussion of a modern successor of the song cycle, the concept album as part of today s popular culture."

I Healed You with My Word

I was hospitalized for six days. After Dr. Michael Friedman, M.D., F.A.C.S., my urologist, studied the test and he said that I had a bladder infection, cyst on my kidneys, and my prostate was enlarged which would have to be surgically removed. The medical term is BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy). I did not have the surgery. In a follow-up appointment, Dr. Friedman and his nurse did a Cystoscopy. Before finishing, he turned and asked, "What did you do? The prostate is completely healed. It has returned to its normal size!" I answered, "I did the same as I did about my heart - I prayed!" I shared my testimony with a lady, my age and gave her a tract. When I saw her the next month, the first thing she said was, "Mr. Graham, I want to thank you for sharing your faith. It has truly affected my life, and I want you to know it. Thanks. I had not read my Bible or prayed in years, but I began doing both that day and I continue each day." Jesus said, "whoever acknowledges me before man, I will also acknowledge before God." Matthew 10: 32. Vicki Caldwell had typed 80% of my original manuscript. She has worked on it, making changes, additions, corrections etc. from the first word to it's ending, several times. One day as I gave the last handwritten copies of three Chapters to her, Vicki reached out and touched my hand. Looking at me, she said, "R.C., I was born Greek Orthodox and raised in Catholic schools, but I want you to know I have learned more about the Bible through talking with you and typing your manuscript than I have through my entire church life. Thanks."
