Toward a Sociology of Education

By including material from literary, philosophical, and anthropological sources, and by selecting readings which consider educational practice both within and beyond formal educational contexts, this book broadens the character of sociological inquiry in education. The editors bring together material they have found valuable when working with students of education and sociology at all levels. Many of these articles and extracts are either inaccessible or have not been reprinted. The collection should stimulate inquiry about the assumptions underlying current debates on curriculum, streaming, school organization, methods of teachin, and preconceived notions of ability.

Class, Ideologies and Educational Futures

This book provides a systematic and detailed analysis of class relations in advanced capitalist societies as a basis for understanding both class differences in educational practices and the relative effects of class and other social background factors on public attitudes toward education. Secondly, the book offers an empirically-grounded summary of the contending educational ideologies in advanced capitalism, through a discourse analysis of the public statements of spokes-persons for major class groupings. Thirdly, using the data from several public opinion surveys in Ontario, profiles of public attitudes on critical education issues are interpreted in terms of the actual effects of class and other social background factors, as well as the mediating influences of contending ideologies. Finally a general approach and array of tactics for creating practical alternative educational and social futures are illustrated through the book.

First Published in 2008. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

To illustrate how such an integration could be useful, we recall conducting an editorial review of a manuscript submitted by Klein and Pridemore (1992) for publication in ETR&D. The focus of their study was the effects of cooperative ...

Design and Analysis in Educational Research

ANOVA Designs in SPSS®

This book presents an integrated approach to learning about research design alongside statistical analysis concepts. Strunk and Mwavita maintain a focus on applied educational research throughout the text, with practical tips and advice on how to do high-quality quantitative research. Design and Analysis in Educational Research teaches research design (including epistemology, research ethics, forming research questions, quantitative design, sampling methodologies, and design assumptions) and introductory statistical concepts (including descriptive statistics, probability theory, sampling distributions), basic statistical tests (like z and t), and ANOVA designs, including more advanced designs like the factorial ANOVA and mixed ANOVA, using SPSS for analysis. Designed specifically for an introductory graduate course in research design and statistical analysis, the book takes students through principles by presenting case studies, describing the research design principles at play in each study, and then asking students to walk through the process of analyzing data that reproduce the published results. An online eResource is also available with data sets. This textbook is tailor-made for first-level doctoral courses in research design and analysis, and will also be of interest to graduate students in education and educational research.

Often, manuscripts go through multiple rounds of peer review before publication. This is a sort of quality control for published research. When something is published in a peer-reviewed journal, that means it has undergone extensive ...

Educational Design Research

The field of design research has been gaining momentum over the last five years, particularly in educational studies. As papers and articles have grown in number, definition of the domain is now beginning to standardise. This book fulfils a growing need by providing a synthesised assessment of the use of development research in education. It looks at four main elements: background information including origins, definitions of development research, description of applications and benefits and risks associated with studies of this kind how the approach can serve the design of learning environments and educational technology quality assurance - how to safeguard academic rigor while conducting design and development studies a synthesis and overview of the topic along with relevant reflections.

How then should we stimulate thoughtful consideration of design research proposals, activities, and manuscripts? For starters, the design research community could become more explicit about the quality standards that it adheres to and ...

Studies in the History of Educational Theory Vol 1 (RLE Edu H)

Nature and Artifice, 1350-1765

This book examines key theorists in depth in order to give some insight into cultural change as reflected in their curricular recommendations and in the interplay they reveal between the two fundamental educational concepts of ‘artifice’ and ‘nature’. The essays on the various theorists – Erasmus, Vives, Castiglione, Elyot, Montaigne, Bacon, Comenius, Locke and Rousseau can be read separately but the book also forms an integrated whole, with a continuity of themes explored from theorist to theorist. The book not only charts a historical development but also reveals much that may deepen our understanding of contemporary educational dilemmas.

formative Evaluation for Educational Technologies

The designers of educational or training programs that employ electronic technology might have many questions about a project while it is still in the early stages of development. For instance: Is the program's presentation too simple, or too complex for its target audience? Does the pacing of the program help or hinder comprehension? Which aspects of the program are the most appealing, and why? Formative evaluation can answer these, or similar questions. It can help guide designers of television programs, microcomputer software, interactive videodiscs, or virtually any other educational item, in making modifications that can lead to the development of a final product that fully achieves its stated goals. Until very recently, however, the person interested in avoiding potential problems through the use of formative evaluation would have been faced with difficulties of a different kind. Comprehensive treatment of formative evaluation has been scarce, and published discussion on formative evaluation of computer-based materials has been virtually nonexistent. Until now, that is. Barbara Flagg's Formative Evaluation for Educational Technologies provides comprehensive treatment of formative evaluation. The book offers: * extensive coverage of all the methods evaluators might use to assess the user friendliness, the appeal, and the outcome effectiveness of an educational program. * extensive focus on new technologies * coverage of all phases of program development, from initial idea to final product * discussion of formative evaluation as part of the broader field of curriculum evaluation * numerous case studies. This volume will appeal to a wide variety of people engaged in formative evaluation. It is an excellent guide for newcomers to the field; it is a state-of-the art document for established practitioners of instructional design and curriculum evaluation.
