The Serious Business of Worship

Essays in Honour of Bryan D. Spinks

The study of liturgy has received criticism from scholars and practitioners alike: the academic discipline of liturgiology has been compared to the hobby of stamp collection, and proponents for liturgical renewal argue that worship must be made more accessible and relevant. Bryan Spinks has been an important moderating voice in this discussion, reminding both academic and ecclesial communities that Christ is made known in the liturgical riches of the past as well as in contemporary forms of the present. Inspired by Spinks' work, this volume brings together biblical, historical, and theological scholars to discuss the theme of continuity and change in worship. Its historical range begins with the early church, extends through the Reformation, and concludes with a discussion of issues facing contemporary liturgical reform. In recognition of the fact that Professor Spinks' work has been widely influential in both Europe and the United States, the editors have solicited liturgical perspectives from scholars with international reputations on sides of the Atlantic.

Legal Anthropology

This account of the anthropology of law is remarkable in its command of the Anglo-American and Continental literatures in this field; and it is timely in addressing contemporary issues. Two central projects are carried through in succesive parts of the book. In the first, the author outlines the history of the "anthropology of law," drawing on the intellectual context of legal development. In the second, Professor Rouland examines the legal ideas, institutions and processes of small-scale non-Western societies, moving finally towards an anthropology of modern law. The author has published widely within the field of legal anthropology.

ICT and Literacy

Information and Communications Technology, Media, Reading, and Writing

What does literacy mean in the 21st century? How can information and communications technology (ICT) contribute to the development of traditional literacy? And how do our traditional views of literacy need to change in response to ICT? ICT and literacy are two of the most urgent concerns for any modern educator, and in order to understand either of these phenomena adequately, one must understand them in relation to each other. ICT and Literacy provides the answers. The authors examine literacy in relation to a wide range of technology and media, especially books, video editing, interactive multimedia, and on-line materials. With a focus on library provision as well as teaching, the authors emphasize the importance of "joined-up thinking" on the part of educators.

A Reader's Guide to this classic 'anti-moral' text by an eminent Nietzsche academic.

The implication here is that his readers, scholars in their own right, belong either with the unwitting champions of the ascetic ideal or with those 'sufi'erers . . . who fear only one thing: regaining consciousness'.
