Its goal is to examine timely issues in education policy from a critical anthropological, ethnographic, and comparative perspective, and through this to theorize new ways of understanding how policy "does its work." At the center is a commitment to an engaged anthropology of education policy that uses anthropological knowledge to imagine and foster more equitable and just forms of schooling. The authors examine the ways in which education policy processes create, reflect, and contest regimes of knowledge and power, sorting and stratifying people, ideas, and resources in particular ways. In contrast to conventional analyses of policy as text-based, dictated, linear, and rational, an anthropological perspective positions policy at the interface of top-down, bottom-up, and meso-level processes, and as de facto and de jure. Demonstrating how education policy operates as a social, cultural, and deeply ideological process "on the ground," each chapter clearly delineates the implications of these understandings for educational access, opportunity, and equity. Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India

Understanding the Relationship Between Teacher Education, Teacher Effectiveness, and Student Outcomes

By drawing on quantitative data and qualitative analyses of five major national education policies implemented in India over the last 15 years, this comprehensive volume explores their impact on teacher quality and perceived effectiveness, explaining how this relates to variations in student performance. Responding to a national agenda to increase the quality of the Indian teacher workforce, Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India critically questions the application of human capital theory to Indian education policy. Chapters provide in-depth and strategically structured analyses of five national policies – including the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – to see how Indian policymakers use teacher quality as a driver and measurement of education and national economic development. Ultimately, the text offers evidence-based policy recommendations to improve teacher quality in India, suggesting that while all five policies have contributed significant frameworks and recommendations for teacher quality reform, they have failed to move beyond a symbolic function. Overcoming Fragmentation in Teacher Education Policy and Practice

A collaborative series with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education highlighting leading-edge research across Teacher Education, International Education Reform and Language Education. The need for greater coherence between the different aspects of teacher education has long been recognised. The 'universitization' of initial teacher education is sometimes perceived as widening the gap between theory and practice. In many countries there is no firm alignment between initial teacher education, induction and continuing professional development. Teacher education drivers are related to national systems and represent conflicting forces on teacher education institutions. Neoliberal policy initiatives have resulted in greater fragmentation. This book considers these issues in an international context and aims to identify directions for future research in relation to teacher education policy and practice.

The function of this induction process is to help beginning teachers construct their professional identity and develop professional practices suited to the realities of school and integrated into their conceptions of good teaching.
