ATM Communication in Practice

It is with great pleasure that I respond to the kind invitation of the BAF project to contribute prefatory remarks to this account of their work, carried out under the auspices of the RACE Programme (Research and Development in Advanced Communications in Europe). The objective of the RACE Programme was to support the intro duction of Integrated Broadband Communications in the European Union. An important part of this overall objective was served by the BAF project, which has aimed to produce a cost-effective access facility for broadband networks, especially for residential and small business customers. As this book relates, in order to do so the project consortium merged two advanced communications technologies, ATM and PON, with contributions from many other disciplines, to create a demon strator which has been subject to extensive trials and testing which have been fruitful both in contributions to international standards and in development work to improve further future generations of the system. This book forms an important reference source through the experience gained in this unique experiment in advanced telecommunications. Another significant feature of the project should not be overlooked however. When the European Commission first began looking at supporting industrial research in Europe in the mid-1980s, it was clear that we had important strengths in telecommunications. It was equally clear that a revolution was on the way - the digital revolution - and European pre-eminence in the field was not guaranteed for ever.

Functional Grammar and Verbal Interaction

Functional Grammar (FG) as set out by Simon Dik is the ambitious combination of a functionalist approach to the study of language with a consistent formalization of the underlying structures which it recognizes as relevant. The present volume represents the attempts made within the FG framework to expand the theory so as to cover a wider empirical domain than is usual for highly formalized linguistic theories, namely that of written and spoken discourse, while retaining its methodological precision. The book covers an array of phenomena, both from monologue and from dialogue material, relating to discourse structure, speaker aims and goals, action theory, the flow of information, illocutionary force, modality, etc. The central question underlying most of the contributions concerns the relation between, and the division of labour between the existing grammatical module of FG on the one hand, and a discourse or pragmatic module capable of handling such discourse phenomena on the other. What emerges are new proposals for the formal treatment of for instance illocutionary force and the informational status of constituents. Many of the data discussed are from 'real' language rather than being invented, and samples from various languages other than English (Spanish, Polish, Latin, French) are examined and used as illustrations of the theoretical problem to be solved. Adapun, terkait nilai-nilai Islam rahmatan lil’âlamîn dalam bidang etika ekologi/lingkungan hidup adalah tanggung jawab manusia sebagai khalifah terhadap kelestarian alam, hormat terhadap alam, solidaritas kosmis, kasih sayang dan kepeduliaan terhadap alam, no harm (tidak merugikan alam), pola hidup sederhana, hidup selaras dengan alam, demokrasi bumi, pluralisme makhluk hidup, dan keadilan ekologis. Etika sosial Islam yang menjadi rahmat sosial Islam, dalam konteks Indonesia kontemporer, merupakan isu yang relevan. Alasannya, karena negara kita masih harus menghadapi dan menyelesaikan agenda yang bertentangan dengan nilai-nilai tersebut. Buku ini, karenanya, merupakan salah satu ikhtiar untuk ikut dalam perbaikan bangsa dan negara Indonesia, sebagai negara Muslim terbesar.
