A business case for an information systems investment involves a comprehensive understanding of both the likely resources as well as the business drivers which will assist business managers improve their performance and thereby obtain a stream of benefits from the investment. In general there are approximately six steps in producing a business case for an information systems investment. 1. Determine the high-level business outcomes that will be clearly and comprehensively expressed as a set of opportunities the organization can take advantage of, or problems that need to be rectified. 2. Identify the corporate critical success factors that will be supported or enhanced by the operation of the completed information systems project or investment. 3. Create a list of specific and detailed outcomes or benefits, their appropriate metrics, measuring methods and responsibility points that are represented by the stakeholders. 4. Quantify the contribution made by the outcomes, which requires associating numbers or benefit values with outcomes where this is possible. 5. Highlight the risks associated with the project. Fundamental to this new approach to developing a business case for information systems investment is the fact that it incorporates much more than the financial numbers which are typically found in the standard approach to a feasibility study. This approach looks behind the financial numbers to the improvements in business performance which are facilitated by information systems and which are the real drivers of the benefits. Furthermore, this approach to developing a business case allows the organization to manage the process so that the required results are achieved.

This book is designed for all those who are involved in the decision to invest in information systems. This book is especially relevant to senior business executives, senior financial managers and IT executives.

Re-reading Education Policies

A Handbook Studying the Policy Agenda of the 21st Century

This book collects studies with a 'critical education policy orientation', and presents itself as a handbook of matters of public concern. The term 'critical' does not refer to the adoption of a particular theoretical framework or methodology, but rather it refers to a very specific ethos or way of relating to the present and the belief that the future should not be the repetition of the past. This implies a concern about what is happening in our societies today and what could or should be happening in the future. As a consequence, the contributors to the book rely on a general notion of public policy that takes on board processes, practices, and discourses at a variety of levels, in diverse governmental and non-governmental contexts, and considers the relation of policy to power, to politics and to social regulation. Following the detailed introduction that aims at picturing the landscape of studies with a 'critical education policy orientation', the book presents re-readings of six policy challenges; globalization, knowledge society, lifelong learning, equality/democracy/social inclusion, accountability/control/efficiency and teacher professionalism. It seeks to contextualise these in relation to issues of current global concern at the start of the 21st century. Despite the diversity of approaches, this collection of critical education policy studies shares a concern with what could be called 'the public, and its education, ' and represents a snapshot of education policy research at a particular time.

This book collects studies with a 'critical education policy orientation', and presents itself as a handbook of matters of public concern.

Second Language Teacher Professional Development

Technological Innovations for Post-Emergency Teacher Education

This edited book brings together documented evidence and theoretical propositions on the essential mediating role of digital technology in L2 teacher education and professional development. Topics range from technological affordances in teacher education, to challenges and responses to emergency transition from face to face to virtual professional development, to successful practices of online teacher training courses. Bringing together examples from various countries and contexts of how L2 teacher trainers and trainee teachers view these forced changes and react to them, the volume fills a gap in the use of digital technology in contexts where teacher educators and trainee teachers are not technology-literate and not prepared for technology-oriented education. In addition to a Foreword by Mark Warschauer and Introduction and Conclusion chapters by Editors, the volume features 13 full-length chapters by some of the well-known experts from countries such as Australia, Finland, Mexico, the UK, the USA, Spain, Singapore, Turkey and Sweden.

Business, Politics, and Society

An Anglo-American Comparison

How much power does business exercise in Britain and the United States? Are giant firms that operate on a global scale beyond the control of elected governments? Are political parties in the pocket of business interests? All these questions go to the heart of the viability of a modern democracy, and have been given increased urgency since the end of 2007 and the economic crisis that has reverberated around the world. Business, Politics, and Society compares business and politics in two of the most important capitalist democracies: the United States and the United Kingdom. It introduces the big analytical and moral issues involved in the study of business power; traces the historical origins of business politics in the two nations; examines the role of giant firms, and the relationship between business and political parties; describes the special politics of the small business sector; scrutinizes the changing social and cultural environment of business; and sums up by raising problems of legitimacy and reward that are now the stuff of public policy. Boxed features in each chapter also extend the range of book, to business politics in the European Union, and to national systems beyond the United States and the United Kingdom. The book will be invaluable for students of business systems who now need to grasp the political setting of business, and to students of American and British politics, who now need to grasp the impact of business power on the workings of democratic government.
