Nature Worship

An Account of Phallic Faiths and Practices, Ancient and Modern; Including the Adoration of the Male and Female Powers in Various Nations and the Sacti Puja of Indian Gnosticism (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Nature Worship: An Account of Phallic Faiths and Practices, Ancient and Modern; Including the Adoration of the Male and Female Powers in Various Nations and the Sacti Puja of Indian Gnosticism Mr. Gerald Massey in his Natural Genesis, speaking Of the origin of the phallic cult, says: According to Theal, the African historian and collector of folk tales, the Kafiirs have no Sabbath, and keep none of the sacred seasons of periodic recurrence, com mouly celebrated by a festival. But from time immemorial, they have preserved the primitive custom of rejoicing at the first appearance of the menstrual period of the female. This they celebrate in what is their sole festival. At that time of a girl's life, all the young women in her neighbourhood meet for rejoicing, at which they celebrate the festival of pubescence. These young women are then distributed among the men who are selected to lie with them, but who are prohibited from sexual intercourse; and if the trespass be committed the men are fined - a primitive mode Of paying a price which was afterwards continued in the compensation enforced at the time of marriage. We still keep the birthday and celebrate the coming of age at a fixed period of life; but the festival Of puberty is extant to show that the earliest birthday ever memorialized was not the day on which the child was born into the world, but the time of rebirth into womanhood and manhood. When applied to the male, this period Of pubescence suggested the birthday of the boy who was at this time admitted as a young man into the totemic tribe 3 hence the typical 'second birth' celebrated in the mysteries when the first had also been acknowledged. Religion Online provides new insights about religiosity in a contemporary context, offering a comprehensive look at the intersection of digital media, faith communities, and practices of all sorts. * Shows how religion is as important as politics in contemporary public affairs * Breaks new ground on the subject of media and religion (e.g., studying actual audiences, exploring cultural religion outside denominations, and synthesizing communication and sociology of religion) * Features a variety of diverse voices from different faiths to give readers a broad overview of ideas * Describes how young adults have a unique affinity for new media and are more comfortable using them in religious worship than previous generations

While other works describe case studies, this book explains how new media are interwoven into the very fabric of religious belief, behavior, and community.

Essential Worship

A Handbook for Leaders

An Essential Guide to Understanding and Leading Worship Worship leaders are adrift in a sea of worship resources, but, incredibly, no single book provides a simple introduction to worship and worship leading. Essential Worship is a concise, easy-to-read primer on the basics of worship theology and practice. Each concept is introduced clearly and concisely. Diagrams, charts, and bulleted lists make the information easy to digest. And preparation and reflection questions help readers apply the material to their own church context. Whether one is a beginner or an experienced worship leader, readers from all traditions will find in this resource a solid foundation for future success. It is particularly well-suited for the first-time worship or praise band leader, as well as for pastors who want to be more intentional about the music in their services.

This book is a good springboard for conversation and growth for both worship leaders and congregations."--Sandra McCracken, singer-songwriter "This is the book we've been waiting for!

Sacred Power, Sacred Space

An Introduction to Christian Architecture and Worship

Jeanne Halgren Kilde's survey of church architecture is unlike any other. Her main concern is not the buildings themselves, but rather the dynamic character of Christianity and how church buildings shape and influence the religion. Kilde argues that a primary function of church buildings is to represent and reify three different types of power: divine power, or ideas about God; personal empowerment as manifested in the individual's perceived relationship to the divine; and social power, meaning the relationships between groups such as clergy and laity. Each type intersects with notions of Christian creed, cult, and code, and is represented spatially and materially in church buildings. Kilde explores these categories chronologically, from the early church to the twentieth century. She considers the form, organization, and use of worship rooms; the location of churches; and the interaction between churches and the wider culture. Church buildings have been integral to Christianity, and Kilde's important study sheds new light on the way they impact all aspects of the religion. Neither mere witnesses to transformations of religious thought or nor simple backgrounds for religious practice, church buildings are, in Kilde's view, dynamic participants in religious change and goldmines of information on Christianity itself.

The Church at Worship

Theology, Spirituality, and Practice of Parish Liturgy

Parishes will find The Church at Worship to be an ideal formation resource as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy. In The Church at Worship, Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco helps students of liturgy, whether in the classroom, the liturgy committee, or on the parish staff, understand the spirituality and theology of the liturgy. As Monsignor Kevin W. Irwin notes in the foreword, the author guides us to view the liturgy from the inside, to allow its words, texts, signs, and gestures to speak to us and for us. From this view, readers are able to see how participation in the liturgy is to be internal and external at the same time. DeGrocco relates that such participation changes us to be at service to the world to build up the kingdom of God.This book is written in short, readable sections that contain discussion questions and suggestions for further reading. Written in such a way, it accommodates both the classroom and the parish. Parishes will find The Church at Worship helpful in the formation of the parish liturgy committee and for deepening the understanding of the liturgy among parish staff. As the material deals with the general and specific aspects of celebrating ritual, it is immediately relevant to the life of the parish. Suggested reading refers the audience to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, other documents of the Second Vatican Council, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Muslim Women in the Economy

Development, Faith and Globalisation

This book explores the changing role of Muslim women in the economy in the twenty-first century. Sociological developments such as secular education, female-focused policies, national and global commitments to gender equality as well as contemporary technological advances have all served to shift and redefine the domestic and public roles of Muslim women, leading in many places to increases in workplace participation and entrepreneurship. The volume investigates the contexts of these shifts and the experiences of women balancing faith and other commitments to actively engage in the economy in vastly different countries. The book looks at how family codes and the understandings of Muslim male and female roles sit alongside social and economic advances and the increases in women partaking in the economy. Within a globalised world, it also highlights the importance of the implementation of the current sustainable development priorities in the context of Muslim societies, including Sustainable Development Goal 5 that focuses on the vital role of women and their full participation in all areas of sustainable development. With cases ranging from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya through to Spain, Bulgaria and Australia, Muslim Women in the Economy will be of considerable interest to those studying, researching and interested in gender, development and religious studies.

This book explores the changing role of Muslim women in the economy in the twenty-first century.

The Sociology of Islam

Secularism, Economy and Politics

The contributions of Islam to world civilization are undeniable. However, in the last 100 years, Muslims have been confronted with the effects and ramifications of modernity, caused by the emergence of global capitalism. What does modernity ultimately mean for Muslims? How will the historical precepts of Islam meet the changes in our globalized world? To date, most scholars on Islam have tried to understand Muslim societies from historical observation alone. This simplistic academic approach does not allow us to understand the entire transformation that has taken place in Muslim societies. Sociological scholarship, on the other hand, argues that it would be difficult to understand Islam without first understanding the theoretical and practical underpinnings of the social structure of Muslim societies, which are embedded in the relationship between religion, the economy, politics, and society. This book - now available in paperback - makes a connection between the economic system and its social and political consequences in Muslim societies. It examines the role of Islam within Muslim societies in the context of ongoing and increasingly powerful, neoliberal, economic processes in a globalized world, and the way in which Islam influences the West because of the interdependent relations brought about by the global economy. These interdependencies create social and political transformation on both sides.

This book attempts to make the connection between the economic system and its social and political consequences within Muslim societies.
